  • a vehicle guidance or proximity warning system includes at least one series of light receivers and at least one series of light transmitters, both series being fixed relative to a vehicle trackway, in which each receiver is arranged to react to light from a vehicle headlight such as to cause at least one transmitter spaced apart from the receiver to transmit light.
  • Each series is preferably embedded in a road surface parallel to a road centre line, and preferably form a single line. Alternatively one or both series can be positioned at the side of a road.
  • transmitters forward of a direction of vehicle motion are caused to transmit light.
  • transmitters rearward of a direction of vehicle motion are caused to transmit light, and in this case light transmitters are preferably adapted to transmit light in the red spectrum range.
  • a light receiver and a light transmitter are housed in a common unit, preferably of the "cats eyes",type which can advantageously also house a conventional "cats eye” reflector.
  • each light receiver is connected by a fibre optic cable to a single light transmitter.
  • each light receiver may communicate with an actuator whereby light from a powered light source is supplied to an associated transmitter.
  • this powered light units are preferably sited at the side of the roadway with light being communicated thereto and therefrom via fibre optic cables.

Abstract

Les phares d'un véhicule (20), éclairant successivement une série de récepteurs lumineux (13) fixés par rapport à une route (10), éclairent successivement une série d'émetteurs lumineux (15) également fixés par rapport à cette route (10), à l'avant du véhicule (20) pour lui servir de guide, par exemple dans les virages, ou à l'arrière du véhicule (20) pour avertir les véhicules suiveurs de sa présence dans des conditions de mauvaise visibilité. La lumière (21) arrivant sur les récepteurs (13) est transmise le long de câbles à fibres optiques (14), de préférence directement vers les émetteurs (15); dans un autre mode de réalisation, cette lumière (21) peut activer des sources lumineuses placées sur les côtés de la route, afin d'éclairer les émetteurs (15) par l'intermédiaire de câbles à fibres optiques (14). Le récepteur lumineux (13) et l'émetteur lumineux (15) peuvent être logés dans une unité commune (11), constituée par exemple par un bloc (12) indiquant la surface de la route, qui comprend un réflecteur reflex (16) et qui peut être enfoncé dans le revêtement de la route.
