Abstract
A system of lighting for roads and paths, comprises lights mounted on supports beside the road, lane or path. The lights are activated by sensor switches triggered by approaching vehicles or pedestrians. Catseyes or reflectors are installed at the edges of the road and its traffic lanes or path. The lights are recessed or hooded, and directed slightly downwards, across and forwards, to minimise peripheral dazzle. They are activated in batches illuminating the road or path for a safe distance, then extinguished after an adequate time period. The catseyes or reflectors are colour coded to denote the edges of the road and lanes and path.
Description
ROADL I GHTS ROADLIGHTS.
DESCRIPTION: A system for lighting motorways, dual carriageways and other roads and paths.
Roads are usually lit by street lights. These provide good visibility for motorists but carry many disadvantages including the following:
They are expensive to procure, install, operate, maintain, service and replace.
All operations on them cause disruption to traffic.
They are unsightly in daylight.
They are obtrusive in darkness.
They are dangerous in collision.
According to the present invention there is provided a system of lighting for roads which is based on the interaction of spotlights, sensor beam switches and reflective strip catseyes.
In a preferred embodiment the system includes the following features: 1. Spotlights are mounted on the crash barriers or on other low supports on each side of the road and directed across the road.
Each spotlight is directed slightly ahead of a line crossing the road, and is hooded to restrict its beam to a narrow zone.
Its power is restricted to project its beam to the centre of the road only.
Its direction is slightly below the horizontal so that the beam illuminates the road and is reflected by the catseyes and the rear reflectors of vehicles but does not dazzle road users.
2. Reflective strip catseyes are installed in the road marking the edges of the lanes and the sides of the road.
They are coloured according to the conventional scheme in respect of the nearside and offside edges of the road and of its lanes, access and slip roads.
The reflective strip catseyes catch the beams from the spotlights and mark the edges of the road and lanes for a safe distance ahead of the vehicle.
3. Sensor beams able to detect movement are mounted on the crash barriers and directed across the road.
When an approaching vehicle breaks a beam the spotlights are activated for a safe distance ahead and illuminate the road and the catseyes.
After a safe period which would allow the vehicle to pass the illuminated section of the road the lights are extinguished to save electricity and to return the locality to its natural darkness. Any stationary vehicle or other obstacle is illuminated when the system is triggered by the approach of another road user.
4. The spotlights have lenses mounted on their sides which face the approaching traffic. They are lit by the spotlights and are coloured according to the above convention for each side of the road.
Claims (7)
1. A system of lighting comprising lights mounted on supports beside the intended route, and directed across it, the lights being activated by sensor switches triggered by approaching vehicles or route users, and extinguished by time switches after a suitable period, and having seyes or reflectors installed at the edges of the route, path or traffic lanes.
2. A system of lighting as in Claim 1 in which batches of lights are activated by approaching vehicles or pedestrians by means of light beam sensors.
3. A system of lighting as in Claims 1 or 2 in which the lights are directed diagonally forwards and across the road or path.
4. A system of lighting as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3 having lights recessed within housing to minimise peripheral dazzle.
5. A system of lighting as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 4 having lights directed slightly downwards towards the road or path to minimise peripheral dazzle.
G. A system of lighting as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 5 having fluorescent catseyes or reflectors installed to mark the road and/or its lanes and/or the path and/or the route.
7. A system of lighting as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 6 having windows in the sides of the lights visible to approaching road ol path users.
