Abstract

A traffic warning system comprises a series of light receivers mounted on a road and arranged to receive light from the headlights of a vehicle, sand light causing a series of light emitters also fixed relative to the road to successively light up ahead and/or behind the vehicle to warn other traffic in conditions of poor visibility and/or to guide said vehicle.

Description

PANEL A ROAD TRAFFIC FOG WARNING SYSTEM THIS INVENTION RELATES TO THE USE OF FIBRE OPTICS AS A FOG WARNING SYSTEM FOR ROAD TRAFFIC.
FREQUENT ACCIDENTS OCCUR IN FOG CONDITIONS ON THE HIGHWAYS DUE TO DRIVERSBEING UNABLE TO SEE THE VEHICLE IN FRONT. THERE ARE SOPHISTICATED COMPUTERISED IN CAR METHODS BEING DEVELOPED TO ADVISE DRIVERS OF OTHER VEHICLES IN THE AFOREMENTIONED CONDITIONS.
HOWEVER THE SIMPLICITY OF FIBRE OPTICS WILL BE MORE ACCEPTABLE AND AVAILABLE TO ALL DRIVERS AS OPPOSED TO DRIVERS WHO CAN AFFORD THE INCAR INSTRUMENTATION.
ACCORDING TO THE PRESENT INVENTION A FIBRE OPTIC TAPE IS FIXED TO THE CENTRE OF THE CARRIAGEWAY. AT INTERVALS ALONG THE CARRIAGEWAY A RECEIVER END OF THE FIBRE OPTIC WILL BE PROTRUDE FROM THE TAPE. THE OPPOSITE END CALLED THE SIGNAL WILL PROTRUDE AT A DISTANCE ALONG THE CARRIAGEWAY.
FIGURE 1 SHOWS IN PERSPECTIVE A CARRIAGEWAY WITH TWO VEHICLES. THE FIBRE OPTIC TAPE RUNNING LONGITUDINALLY TO THE CARRIAGEWAY.
PANEL B REFERRING TO THE DRAWING THE FIBRE OPTIC WARNING SYSTEM COMPRISES A TAPE 1 WHICH HOUSED THE FIBRE OPTIC 2. THE TAPE IS FIXED TO THE CENTRE OF THE CARRIAGEWAY. AT INTERVALS IN THE TAPE THE FIBRE OPTIC WILL PROTRUDE 3 AND 3B, ONE END BEING THE RECEIVER 3, THE OTHER END BEING THE SIGNAL LIGHT 3B. THE TAPE CAN BE MADE IN MULTIPLES TO CONTINUE IN LENGTH.

Claims (3)

  1. PANEL C
CLAIMS 1. FIBRE OPTIC WILL RECEIVE LIGHT FROM A VEHICLES HEAD LIGHTS AND TRANSMIT IT ALONG ITS LENGTH AND PRODUCE A LIGHT AT ITS END.
  2. 2. THE FIBRE OPTIC TAPE IS FIXED TO THE CARRIAGEWAY WITH THE FIBRE OPTIC PROTRUDING ONE END A RECEIVER THE OTHER BEING THE SIGNAL.
  3. 3. WHEN A VEHICLES HEADLIGHTS PASS OVER THE FIBRE OPTIC RECEIVER THE LIGHT IS TRANSMITTED TO THE END OF THE FIBRE OPTIC PRODUCING A RED LIGHT. THE FIBRE OPTIC SIGNAL LIGHT WILL BE POSITIONED TO THE REAR OF THE AFOREMENTIONED VEHICLE AT A SUITABLE DISTANCE TO BE DETERMINED. A FOLLOWING VEHICLE THOUGH UNABLE TO SEE THE VEHICLE IN FRONT WILL SEE THE RED LIGHT OF THE FIBRE OPTIC GIVING WARNING THAT A VEHICLE IS AHEAD.
