N. D. INGRAM. COMBINED PENCIL CASE AND 00MB CASE.
No. 605,674. Patented June 14,1898.
UNITED STATES PATENT EEicE.
NATHAN'D. INGRAM, on HOLYOKE, MASSACHUSETTS.
COMBINED PENCIL-CASE AND COMB-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 605,674, dated June 14, 1898. A plication'filed December 30,1897: Serial No. 664,716. (No model.)
T0 on whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHAN D. INGRAM, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Holyoke, in the county of Hampden and Stateof Massachusetts, have inventedv said pencil-case being adapted to serve as a container for said comb and, when it is desired to use the latter, 'to serve as a holding and stifiening clip whereby a comb of sufficiently-slender dimensions to be contained in said pencil-case may be rendered sufficiently rigid for use when operatively supported by said pencil-case, as hereinbefore described.
The invention consists in the construction set forth in the following specification and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a pencil-case, showing a pocket-comb therein, all constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the pencilcase, showing the comb removed therefrom and operatively supported by said case. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an end elevation of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a sectional View of a modification of the construction shown in the other figures.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a pencil-case, of metal, and an internal bead a, near one end thereof, against which the end of a pencil b may abut when inserted therein. Said pencil-case A is of the ordinary tubular form, as shown by the section and end elevation in Figs. 3 and 4, and one wall thereof is cut through from end to end longitudinally, or from one end nearly to the opposite end, said out being indicated by c, and which construction permits the abutting edges of said case to be sprung apart to receive the back edge of a comb B, which is provided with two oppositely-located grooves f, with which the said edges of the case engage and by which said comb is rigidly held in operative position in a line parallel with theaxis of said case.-
To serve as a convenient means for handling said comb and to provide for the usual rubber eraser, a short tube D is provided, into one end of which is fitted the eraser d. The opposite end of said tubular section may be forced into a die and given an ornamental pointed outline, if desired, asshown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, and said end may then be split by a saw and one end of the comb B be forced therein, and, if need be, a pin inserted through said tubular section and comb to more'securely attach them together. The back edge of'said comb is made to pro ject above the surface of the said tube D, as shown, to the end that the said edge of the comb may be clamped by the edges of the pencil-case, as shown in the drawings, in a line parallel with the longitudinal outline of said comb whether the said comb is in position in the case as shown in Fig. 1 or in operative position, as shown in Fig. 2. Said tubeD has a sliding fit in the end of the pencil-case opposite to that adapted to receive the pencil.
Should it be desired to use a comb of greater width than a pencil-case of ordinary diameter would contain, said case may be made as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, as far as the pencilcontaining end is concerned; but from the beading Ct back to the opposite end of the case A a rib or bead E, located opposite the slit or out o and parallel therewith, is provided for the reception of the toothed edge of the comb.
By means of the construction herein described a pocket-comb of a width not greatly exceeding the diameter of a pencil-case may be made sufficiently rigid for ordinary use by being clamped along its back edge by the edges of the'split pencil-case, as described, whereas unsupported said comb would not possess sufficient rigidity to be of any service whatever, and when said comb is contained in said pencil-case it does not in any way detract from the appearance thereof nor the use of the penciL- Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to'secure by Letters Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture a combined pencil-case and comb-casecomprising a pencil-holding tube adapted to receive at one end a pencil, and provided with a longitudinal slot extending part way the length of the tube from the opposite end thereof, and eoinhis applied, substztntiztllyas hereinbefore a reversible comb having a longitudinallyset forth. grooved back which fits in, and engages the Y T 3 edges of, the slot in the pencil-holding tube, LAUIAA 5 and can slide back and forth therein, and \Vitnesses:
provided with an end tube or plug adapted ll. A. ()IIAPIN, to fit the end of the pencil-tube to which the K. I. CLEMOXS.
