Be it known that 1, CHAnLEs H. SHARP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lockport, in the county of Niagara and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toothpick-Holders 5 and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to toothpick-holders, and is designed particularly for holding av quill toothpick in a covered casing.

One of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a neat, small, and attractive holder or casing for containing a quill toothpick to be carried in the vest-pocket or attached to a chain or cord for ladies wear.

Another object of the invention is to provide a casing or cover for holding a quill toothpick and to provide means whereby the toothpick may be retracted Within the casing or extended therefrom.

These and other objects are attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view of the toothpicl-holder with a cap or cover thereon and the toothpick retracted within the casing. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the sliding member of the casing. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the holder. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the core or plug for holding the toothpick in position within the holder or casing. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of a modified form of my invention, and Fig, 6 is a similar view of another modied form of my invention.

Referring to the drawings for a more particular description of my invention, the numeral l designates a casing or holder open at one end 2 and closed at its opposite end 3, said holder being provided with a longitudinal slot 4A and a bead or enlargement 5 at the termination of the slot to provide means for stopping the cap or cover when placed on the holder at either end thereof. The sliding member 7 consists of a tube open at its opposite ends and provided with a stud 8, adapted to project through the slot 4 in the holder. The core or plug 1() is provided with the enl larged end 11 and is fitted within the holder and may be secured thereto at its inner end in any suitable manner. In use a quill toothpicl 12 is slitted longitudinally and litted upon the core or plug within the sliding member 7. The sliding member may then be moved over the enlarged end of the core, thereby wedging the quill in position. The toothpick is held within its extended position by clamping it between the enlarged head on the core and the inner wall of the sliding member 7, as will be understood.

ln the modified form of the invention shown in 5 the sliding member may be dispensed. with and the core or plug a may be withdrawn from the holder b a sullicient distance to clamp the toothpick c between the enlarged end d of the `plug and the inner wall of the holder, as will be understood. A cap e, provided with a ring f for attachment to a chain, is adapted to be secured to the holder, as shown in Fig. 5.

From the foregoing it will be obvious that my invention will hold a toothpick in position for use and when the cap is placed over the toothpick dust or dirt .is kept therefrom, and when the cap or cover is removed it may be placed upon the reverse end of the holder to serve as a handle in using the pick. The holder may be formed of celluloid, metal, or other suitable material and may be made attractive by ornamentation, if desired.

Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as delined by the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Let-ters Patent., is-

1. A holder for quill toothpicks comprising` a casing having an opening at one end, a plug iitted in said casing, and provided with an enlarged outer end, a sliding member surrounding the plug and litted within the holder, said sliding member having a stud extending through the slot in the holder for clamping the toothpick in position, and a cap or cover fitted to the holder and adapted to be placed upon either end'thereof, substantially as described.
