SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 570,922, dated November 10, 1896.

To all whom it may concern: I

Be it known that I, CHAELEs S. FREER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Pencil-Point Protectors; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to 'the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to vpencil-point protectors and it consists in an improved device in which is combined a point-protector, a pencil-Sharpener, a rubber eraser, and an eraser shield or protector.

In the drawings, Figure l is a side View of my device applied to a pencil. Fig. 2 shows the point-protector removed. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the device, and Fig. 4 is a cross-section on line 4 4, Fig. 3.

The invention comprises four parts, to wit, a pencil-Sharpener A, a point-protector B, a rubber eraser O, and an eraser-Shield D.

The Sharpener A has a cylindrical base composed of an outer ornamental shell ct and an inner sleeve a', which is Slotted longitudinally at a2 and is curved inward slightly, so as to eX- ert a spring-clamping action upon a lead-pencil E when the latter is slid into the sleeve. Between the shellct and the sleeve ct is secured one end of a steel pencil-Sharpener, which has a cylindrical body co3 and a conical end c4, which is ground away on one side to form a Sharp cutting edge a5. The tip of the cone is also ground off to permit the lead of the pencil to project through it.

The point-protector B is composed of a cylindrical tube having at one end a portion b adapted to fit snugly over the body a3 of the pencil-Sharpener, and at the other end a portion b' of reduced diameter to receive and hold the rubber eraser C, which is a cylindrical block of rubber inserted into the tube b' and retained in place by an internal bead b2, which embeds itself in the rubber. The internal diameter of the portion b is the saine as that of the sleeve co', so that when the tube B iS removed from the pencil-Sharpener it can be slipped upon the other end of the pencil, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and

will be firmly held, So that the pencil will Serve as a handle when using the eraser.

In one side of the portion b' of the tube B is a longitudinal slot b3, serving as a guide and stop for a pin d, projecting inwardly from a sleeve D, which has a snug sliding it upon the tube h and is of substantially the same length as said tube. This sleeve Serves as a shield forihe eraser C when pulled outwardly, as Shown in Fig. 1, thus protecting it from dirt and rubbing. By sliding the shield back on the tube b the eraser is exposed for use. The 'exterior of the shield is preferably ornamented by chasing or knurling or the like.

In using my invention the pencil-Sharpener is left upon the pencil-point at all times, since the lead projects Sufliciently for it to be used without removing the Sharpener, which is thus always in position to be used in case the lead gets dull. WVhen thus in use, the tube B, carrying the eraser C and shield D, is slipped upon the other end of the pencil, so that upon sliding back the Shield the eraser can be used. When the pencil is to be replaced in the pocket of the owner, the tube B is slipped on over the Sharpener, as shown in Fig. l, and the shield D iS pulled out, so that the pencil-point,the Sharpener, and the eraser are fully protected.

I am aware that it is not a new idea to combine in one structure a pencil-Sharpener and a point-protector. I therefore do not claim such a device; but,
