Description

1 (No Mudel.) f i y l I H. BCHAPIN.
y BICYCLE STE?. NO. 402,304. 'Patented Apr. 30, 1889.
UNITED Q STAT-Es PATENT EEICE.
HORATIO P. CHAPIN, OF CHICOPEE, MASSACHUSETTS.
BICYCLE-STEP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,304, dated April 30, 1889.
Application led August 31, 1888. Serial No. 284,263.
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, I-IoRATro P. OHAPIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicopee, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bicycle-Steps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this speciication.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and is a side view. Fig. 2 is a front view. Fig..3 is a top view and shows the backboneof the bicycle in section.
The invention relates to improvements in bicycle-steps; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a portion of the backbone of a'bicycle, and B is a step thereon. The step B consists of a single strip of sheet metal bent centrally to engage around the backbone, as at a, and having the outwardly-turned parallel portions b,
forming the step. The outer ends of the portions b are curved inwardly and interlocked by means of the tongue c on one of said portions entering the recess d in the end of the opposite portion. By this construction the (No model.)
ends are firmly locked together Without the use of a bolt or rivet, as usually provided at the ends. The upper edge of each portion b is provided with the teeth e, to prevent the foot from slipping, and the edges are rounded inwardly, so .that the shoe of the rider while mounting does not catch on the teeth until fthe foot is directly on the top of the teeth.
The step may be shifted to any desired position on the backbone and clamped by means of the bolt C, having the nut on its threaded end.
Having described my invention, what I claim 1s l. A bicyle-step formed of metal bent centrally, and having the outer ends of the step portion curved inwardly and interlocked by means of the tongue c and the recess d, substantially as specified.
2. The bicyclestep formed from a single strip of sheet metal bent centrally, having the parallel portions interlocked at the outer ends by a tongue and recess, and having the upper edges provided with teeth and rounded inwardly, in combination with the clampingbolt and nut, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HORATIO P. CHAPIN.
