Description

K. JONES. SLEIGH RUNNER. LPPLIOATIOH FILED JUNE 21. 1910.

UNITED ETATES PATN FEM].
KINSEY JONES, OF \VAUKESHA, V/ISCONSIN.
SLEIGI-I-R-UNNEB.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Krxsnr Jonns, a citizen of the United States, residing at am kesha, in the county of VVaukesha and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Sleigh-Runner, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to runners for sleighs and the'like.
Heretofore it has been customary to form the upturned front end of a runner by bending the wood, this process being comparatively slow and requiring the use of a special kind of wood.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide means whereby the upturned front end portion of a runner can be easily formed without the necessity of bending the wood, it therefore being possible to malze the runner of any wood de sired.
Another object is to provide a. runner which is cheap to manufacture and is durable in construction.
ith these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts here inafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings :Figure l is a side elevation of a runner constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged section on line AB Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is an enlarged section on the line C D Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the end block of the runner.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates the body of the runner, the same being made of any desired shape and the front edge thereof being provided with a flat upper surface such as indicated at 2 and with an upwardly curved bottom surface 3 merging into the bottom of the body 1. The flat surface 3 has longitudinal grooves 4 formed therein and adapted to receive heads 5 which are formed upon the bottom face of an extension block 6. This block is adapted to rest snugly upon the flat face 2 and the upper and lower faces thereof merge into the corresponding faces of the body so that, when the block Specification of Letters Patent.

is in position the runner produced by the body and block has the same general appearance of an ordinary bent runner. Bolts 7 are extended through the meeting portions of the block and body and from the top to the bottom thereof, these bolts also serving to hold a shoe 8 upon the upwardly extending portion of the runner. This shoe has an ofi-setportion 8 at its front end lapped by a metal strap 12 which is extended around the block 6 and is secured upon the upper portion thereof by the bolts 7 and is also secured upon the top face of the body 1. Side plates 9 are placed upon the block 6 and the adjoining portion of the body 1 and are fastened to them by means of transversely extending rivets 10 or the like. Certain of these rivets may be extended through registering grooves 11 formed in the meeting faces of the block 6 and the body 1, these last mentioned fastening devices thus acting as keys to prevent the block 6 from shifting upon the body 1 and in the direction of the length of grooves 4 and beads 5. It will be seen that by securing the block 6 in position in the manner described, it becomes impossible for it to get out of position and the runner produced by combining the block with the body has practically every appearance of an ordinary bent runner and has all of the advantages thereof.
Various changes can be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
hat is claimed is The combination with a runner body having longitudinal grooves in the upper face thereof, of an extension block bearing upon the grooved face of the body and having longitudinal beads seated within the grooves, said beads and grooved portions of the body cooperating to hold the extension against lateral movement relative to the body, bolts extending transversely within the meeting faces of the body and block and intersecting the beads to hold the said block againstmovement relative to the body and in the direction of the length of the beads, bolts extending through the block and body for clamping said block upon the body, side plates held upon the side faces of the block and body by the transversely extending my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature bolts, and a shoe secured to the lower face in the presence of two Witnesses. of the body, and a strap attached to the T T shoe and extending along the lower and up- KIA JONES per exposed faces of the block and fastened Witnesses: to the block and body. MAYME \VALLACE, In testimony that I claim the foregoing as V. J. MURRAY.
