H. W. CALVERT. BICYCLE TOE CLIP.
No. 605,390. Patented June 7, 1898.
H H mm HARRY IV. CALVERT, OF MOKEES ROCKS, PENNSYLVANIA.
JBICY'CLE TOE-CLIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters resent No. 05,390, dated June 7, 1898.
Application filed June 22,1897.
To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, HARRY IV. CALVERT, a citizen of the United States of America, re-
siding at McKees Rocks, in the county of Al-- leglieny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bicycle Toe-Clips, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in toe-clips for bicycles, veloc'ipedes, and the like, and has for its object to provide a clip having side guards for the foot, which engage the brace-stays of the pedal and prevent lateral movement of the toe-clip, said side guards, however, engaging the brace-stays of the pedal in such a manner as to permit the vertical movement of the clip in such a way as to prevent the same binding upon the foot of the rider, but at the same time prevent the strap moving or bending away from the foot sufficiently to lose the advantage gained by the toe-clip engaging the foot when exerting a heavy strain on the pedals 5 and to this end the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more specifically described, and particularly pointed out in the claim. V
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specificatioman'd wherein like letters of reference indicate similar parts throughout both views, in which- 1 Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved toe-clip. Fig. 2 is a side View showing the same attached in position on the pedal.
Referring to the drawings by reference-letters, a indicates the'strap, which may be made solid or open, as shown, and is bent to form a pocket I) for the front portion of the foot, said strap being firmly attached in any suitable manner to either of the brace-plates c of the pedal. Formed: integral with the strap a are'arms (Z (Z, which are bent outwardly and downwardly to form side guards for the foot,
gerial No. 641,848.. (No model.)
and the ends of said arms are bent upwardly to form a hook e, which engages the crossplates f f at the ends of the pedals. These side guards for the clip,wl1ile serving tomake a basket form of the clip to prevent the foot leaving the pedal, also serve to stiffen the strap and prevent the same moving upward beyond a certain distance or bending by rea-v son of the strain on the same when the rider is exerting a heavy strain" upon the pedals, as during such a time the instep of the foot against the strap, together with the toe of the shoe beingforced firmly in the pocket, will serve to bend the strap outwardly, to the detriment of the rider, as the same will no longer be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is
'In a toe-cli p, a strap secured to the pedal, bent to form a pocket for the front part of the foot, arms formed integral with the'strap and being bent outwardly and downwardly to form side guards, the ends of said arms being bent upwardly to form hooks adapted to engage underneath the cross-plate of the pedals to limit the movement of the strap, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HARRY W. CALVERT;
Witnesses: I Q
JOHN NOLAND,
GEQ. B. PARKER.
