Abstract

A chimney cover assembly is illustrated wherein a cover portion extends across several chimneys in superposed relation thereto, a plurality of spaced aligned mounting attachment means extend across the chimneys, clamping means are carried by a free upper edge of a plurality of chimneys and articulated linkage means are carried in spaced relation on each side of the cover portion connected at a lower end thereof to the clamping means and at an upper end thereof to the mounting attachment means, so that the cover assembly may be attached in a spaced relation above a number of chimneys of different constructions, sizes and heights and be permanently clamped thereto.

Patent Nov. 25, 1975 CHIMNEY COVER ASSEMBLY 7 BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Chimney covers have been provided usually in the form of dampers and the like which are operable to be raised and lowered in relation to the top of the chimney through a linkage or some other suitable means from inside the structure with which the chimney is associated. The problem remained to be solved concerning the provision of a chimney cover which is adaptable to fixed positioning above a number of chimneys of different constructions, sizes and heights. It is desirable to provide a cover assembly which may be readily installed, as by a homeowner, upon chimney constructions of any type without the necessity of planning the chimney in advance to accomodate the cover.
Accordingly, it is an important objective of this in vention to provide a universal chimney cover assembly for use in connection with a variety of chimneys and one which might be easily installed.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION It has been found that a universally acceptable chimney cover may be afforded by providing a cover portion as may extend across a number of chimneys and position a mounting attachment thereon utilizing a clamping means carried by a free upper edge of the chimney with an articulated linkage means extending between the clamping means and the mounting attachment carried by the cover.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS The construction designed to carry out the invention will be hereinafter described, together with other features thereof.
The invention will be more readily understood from a reading of the following specification and by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part thereof, wherein an example of the invention is shown and wherein:
FIG. 1 is perspective view illustrating a chimney cover assembly constructed in accordance with the present invention positioned upon a pair of aligned chimneys;
FIG. 2 is a transverse sectional elevation taken on the line 2-2 in FIG. 1, and
FIG. 3 is a longitudinal sectional elevation taken on the line 33 in FIG. 2.
DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT A cover assembly for a chimney is illustrated including a cover portion A extending across a pair of chimneys in superposed relation thereto. A mounting attachment B is carried by the cover portion. Clamping means C are carried by a free upper edge of said chimney. Linkage means D are carried adjacent an upper portion thereof by the mounting attachment and carried adjacent a lower portion thereof by the clamping means. Thus, the cover may be attached in spaced relation above the chimneys and permanently clamped thereto.
The cover portion A of assembly is illustrated as being preferably constructed of sheet metal having a gauge of from about 24 to about 12. Any suitable sheet material and the like, however, may be used to construct the cover. The cover assembly is illustrated as being substantially in the form of an inverted V having wide flat portions and 11 with depending downwardly inclined flaps l2 and 13 carried at respective free edges of the wide portions 10 and 11 respectively.
The mounting attachment means B include a pair of galvanized angle irons 14 and 15 and are preferably secured as by rivets 16 in intermediate portions of the wide flat cover portions 10 and 11. The mounting attachment means preferably extend across the cover as illustrated in the drawing, but they may be forshortened 10 or may assume a different configuration. The respective attachment means 14 and 15 each have a leg secured upon the underside of the cover and are carried in spaced parallel relation to each other. Each of the attachment means includes a free leg 14a and 15a re- 15 spectively, providing an attachment in the form of a bar. The attachment means B further includes a clamp formed as by blocks 16. Each of the blocks 16 have a longitudinal slot 160 therein aligned with respective bars 15a which are received therein. Threaded members 17 are carried by the blocks which may be tightened into clamping engagement with the bars 15a.
The clamping means C includes a pair of spaced opposed elongated elements 18 and 19 for receiving a portion of the chimney, such as a liner 20, therebetween. The elements 18 and 19 may be attached to the chimney liner, whether square or round, or even to a course of bricks or other chimney material. A first member 21 is threadably carried across the opposed elements above the liner 20 and a second member 22 is threadably carried by one of the opposed elements for exerting clamping force against the other of the opposed elements above the first member 21.
The linkage means is pivotally carried adjacent said lower portion thereof as at 23 (FIG. 3) by said clamping means. The linkage means including an intermediate pivot 24 between said upper and lower link portions 25 and 26, respectively.
The linkage means D is pivotally secured to the attachment means B by a pivotal connection 27 with the block 16. It will be noted that each of the pivotal connections include a fastening means having a threaded shank as at 23a and a head as at 23b. The pivot points may be immobilized by tightening the threaded connections thus formed. The linkage may be disposed on either side of center as illustrated in broken lines in FIG. 2.
While a preferred embodiment of the invention has been described, using specific terms, such description is for illustrative purposes only and it is to be understood that changes and variations may be made without A. a cover portion extending across the chimney in superposed relation theretop;
B, a pair of mounting attachments adjustably carried by the cover portion along a substantial length thereof;
C. clamping means carried by a free upper edge of said chimney; D. linkage means carried adjacent an upper portion thereof by said mounting attachments and carried adjacent a lower portion thereof by said clamping means;
E. each said mounting attachment includes a clamp and said linkage is pivotally carried thereby adjacent said upper portion thereof and wherein said 3 linkage is pivotally carried adjacent said lower portion thereof by said clamping means, said linkage means including an intermediate pivot between said upper and lower portions; and
F. said mounting attachments include an elongated bar receiving said clamp and extending across a plurality of chimneys,
whereby said cover may be attached in spaced relation above said chimney and permanently clamped thereto.

The structure set forth in claim 1 wherein said clamping means includes a pair of spaced opposed elongated elements for receiving a portion of the chimney therebetween, a first member threadably carried across said opposed elements above the chimney portion and a second member threadably carried by one of said opposed elements for exerting force against the other of said opposed elements above said first member.
3. A cover assembly for an open-topped chimney terminating in an upper free edge comprising:
A. an elongated cover member superposed across the chimney;
B. a pair of attachment members carried on the underneath side of said cover member extending along said cover member;
C. a plurality of spaced mounting attachments carried on each of said attachment members, at least one of said mounting attachments being slideably carried for longitudinal adjustment along the length of each of said attachment members;
D. a plurality of clamping means carried on the upper free edge of said chimney, means for securing said clamping means to said free edge; and
E. linkage means connected between each of said mounting attachments and each of said clamping means, each of said linkage means pivotally attached at one end to one of said mounting attachments and pivotably attached at the opposite end to one of said clamping means, respectively, and each of said linkage means having an intermediate pivot so that the vertical spacing of said cover member above said chimney may be adjusted;
whereby the longitudinal spacing of said mounting attachments along said attachment members may be adjusted to accommodate the spacing of said linkage means and clamping means for differently sized and shaped chimneys.

Claims (3)

1. A cover assembly for a chimney comprising: A. a cover portion extending across the chimney in superposed relation thereto; B. a pair of mounting attachments adjustably carried by the cover portion along a substantial length thereof; C. clamping means carried by a free upper edge of said chimney; D. linkage means carried adjacent an upper portion thereof by said mounting attachments and carried adjacent a lower portion thereof by said clamping means; E. each said mounting attachment includes a clamp and said linkage is pivotally carried thereby adjacent said upper portion thereof and wherein said linkage is pivotally carried adjacent said lower portion thereof by said clamping means, said linkage means including an intermediate pivot Between said upper and lower portions; and F. said mounting attachments include an elongated bar receiving said clamp and extending across a plurality of chimneys, whereby said cover may be attached in spaced relation above said chimney and permanently clamped thereto.

The structure set forth in claim 1 wherein said clamping means includes a pair of spaced opposed elongated elements for receiving a portion of the chimney therebetween, a first member threadably carried across said opposed elements above the chimney portion and a second member threadably carried by one of said opposed elements for exerting force against the other of said opposed elements above said first member.
3. A cover assembly for an open-topped chimney terminating in an upper free edge comprising: A. an elongated cover member superposed across the chimney; B. a pair of attachment members carried on the underneath side of said cover member extending along said cover member; C. a plurality of spaced mounting attachments carried on each of said attachment members, at least one of said mounting attachments being slideably carried for longitudinal adjustment along the length of each of said attachment members; D. a plurality of clamping means carried on the upper free edge of said chimney, means for securing said clamping means to said free edge; and E. linkage means connected between each of said mounting attachments and each of said clamping means, each of said linkage means pivotally attached at one end to one of said mounting attachments and pivotably attached at the opposite end to one of said clamping means, respectively, and each of said linkage means having an intermediate pivot so that the vertical spacing of said cover member above said chimney may be adjusted; whereby the longitudinal spacing of said mounting attachments along said attachment members may be adjusted to accommodate the spacing of said linkage means and clamping means for differently sized and shaped chimneys.
