Description

1933. L. B. GREENLEAF 1,924,784
MUSICAL TRAP HOLDER Filed Feb. 20, 1932 dam/awn Patented Aug. 29, 1933 UNITED STATES MUSICAL TRAP HOLDER Leland B. Greenleaf, Elkhart, Ind., assignor to C. G. Conn, Ltd., Elkhart, Ind., a corporation of Indiana Application February 20, 1932. Serial No. 594,369
3 Claims.
My invention relates to orchestral musical instruments, and especially to trap supporting devices therefor.
The various traps supporting devices, including the cymbals, are generally carried by the orchestral bass drum and are usually mounted on the bass drum hoop.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a holder for any of the various kinds of traps for drums and which is provided with improved means for clamping the holder to the drum hoop.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved cymbal holder having improved jaw clamping means for securing the holder to a drum hoop.
A third object is to provide a trap or cymbal holder which is provided with a tiltable clamping jaw for securing the holder to a drum hoop.
Other and more specific objects of the invention are mentioned and described herein.
The preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 illustrates a side elevational view of the trap or cymbal holder;
' Figure 2 is a front elevational view thereof;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional side elevational view similar to Fig. 1;
Figure 4 illustrates two views of the movable jaw and hinge stud; and
Figure 5 illustrates an end view of the holder body alone as viewed on line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
Similar numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views on the drawmg. tel Referring now to the details of the drawing the numeral 1 indicates generally a substantially L shaped holder bracketwhich may comprise the upright leg 2 and the substantially horizontal leg 3, the latter of which functions as the stationary jaw of the holder, as hereinafter described. The outer end ofthe jaw portion 3 may be provided with an integral hook section 4 upwardly bent and in which the upright cymbal supporting post 5 is rigidly mounted. The cymbal referred to is not shown in the drawing as its structure is well known, and any suitable means for removably connecting same, or any other trap, with the post 5 may be resorted to.
The numeral 6 indicates generally the movable jaw member of the holder clamping means and which is adapted to coact with the stationary jaw 3 to clamp the holder to the drum hoop '7. The movable jaw 6 may be substantially L shaped in formation and may comprise the lever arm portion 8 and the jaw head 9, said jaw head preferably extending laterally on both sides of the jaw to effect the maximum area of contact with the inside surface of the drum hoop 7 when secured thereto.
The jaw 6 is hingedly and tiltably connected with the holder leg 2 by a stud 10, one end of said stud being rigidly fixed in the portion 8 of said jaw at 11, the other end of said stud being tiltably and nonrotatably connected with the holder leg 2 in a suitable bearing aperture 12 formed therein, there being sufficient clearance around said stud within said bearing aperture to permit said stud to swing slightly in a vertical plane when force is applied to the jaw arm 8.
The jaw hinge stud 10 may be provided with a head 13 at its outer end which head engages in a countersink 14 formed in the holder leg 2 to prevent axial displacement of the stud from its bearing aperture, and preferably the bearing aperture 12 may have its side wall or walls flattened at 15 to correspond with the flattened sides 16 of the stud 10, with clearance therebetween, whereby said stud and the jaw 6 are held against rotation in said bearing aperture.
The numeral 17 indicates a wing screw which is suitably screw threaded through the holder leg 2 to place the screw point in operative relation, or contact, with the jaw arm 8, whereby rotation of said screw will cause the jaw to tilt, thereby projecting the jaw head 9 upward into clamping engagement with the under or inside surface of the drum hoop 7, whereby said drum hoop is rigidly clamped between the stationary jaw 3 and said movable jaw and maintained therebetween by said wing screw.
I claim:
1. A musical trap holder comprising an angular bracket member, one leg thereof providing a stationary jaw, a movable jaw member, stud means tiltably connecting said movable jaw with said bracket member, and means for tilting said movable jaw.
2. A musical trap holder comprising an angular bracket member, one leg thereof providing a stationary jaw, a movable jaw member adapted to coact with said stationary jaw, stud means tiltably connecting said movable jaw with said bracket member, and screw means for tilting said movable jaw.
3. A musical trap holder comprising an angular bracket member, one leg thereof providing a stationary jaw, an angular tiltable jaw member adapted to coact with said stationary jaw, stud means tiltably connecting said movable jaw with said bracket member, and screw means mounted in one leg of said bracket member and engageable With one leg to said jaw member for tilting the latter.
LELAND B. GREENLEAF.
