CI-IIMNEY CAP.
Application filed January 141-, 1928. Serial No. 246,771.
This invention relates to chimney caps or cowls, and has lor its primary object to provide a coioperatively siu'iple and inexpensive device oil this character' adapted to lform a i partial closure for the top ol the chimney, and thereby prevent wind, rain, snow and other foreign n'latter trom passing down the ch i uiuey.
A lurther obj ect is to provide an improved i hood lor the cap, and simple and ellicient mountin,o` means lor the hood, whereby the latter may be readily removed lor renewal or repair.
A still lui-ther object is to provide a chimney cap embodying a iiiinimuin number ot uielrllic parts capable of corrodingn or 4detiufioratinn from longr exposure to the elements, and including` a molded concrete supporting;` base lor the hood adapted to be secured by mortar ou the top ol. the chimney proper to term a finishing` block for the latter.
ilnother object is to provide the supporting base with removable hood supporting posts or upright rods, so that the latter may be liriuly attached, although readily detachable 'lor renewal.
Still another object is to generally improve this class of devices so as to increase their utility, durability and eliiciency, as well as to minimize' the cost of manufacture.
The invention consists in the novel il'orm, combination and arrangement of parts hereinatter more fully described, shown in the accompanying' drawings and claimed.
ln the drawings Vligure l is an elevational view of a chimney cap constructed. in accordance with the present invention and mounted on the top oi a chimney.
l0 Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof, partly broken away and in section.
Figure 3 is a vertical section on of Figure l. y
Figure l is a view similar to Figure 3, showing a modification of the invention.
Figure 5 is a horizontal section showing` a further modification, and
Figure G is a fragmentary transverse vertical section on line (5M-G oi' Figure 5.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, the inwntion is illustrated in connected with a chimney proper 5 ot ordinary brick construction, and includes a supporting' base 6 consistingoi" a hollow molded concrete block adapted to be secured by mortar on top of the chinmei/'f' proper to form a linishing block for line 3 3 the latter. This base block (l is oil slightly larger size at the bottom than the upper end oil the chimney so as to overhang the sides oi the latter, tl e sides of the block all .inclining ce or sloping outwardly and downwardly to shed rain and the like outwardly of the sides ol' the upper end el the chimney and preserve the adjacent bricks and mortar from moisture.
The central ve tical passano or opening1 7 G5 .in the base blocl: is registered with and 'forms a continuation of the smoke inissag'e or llue ot the chimney, and completely embedded in the base block at the ilfour corners oit the latter are nuts or nut members 8 into which are 70 removably threaded the lower ends of hood sifipiwitiup` posts or upright rods 9.
'lhe lower en ds ol. the rods S) are removably .fitted in vertical. openings `formed in the base bloclr G in alinement with. and above the threaded bores of the nut members 8, so that the lower terminals of said rods may be enraged with or disengaged `from the base block as well as the nut members :for ready renewal.
A hood or hood plate l0 is removably mounted on the upper ends of the posts 0r rods 9 so as to be supported in spaced relation to and above the base block G to permit the escape of the smoke and products oil combustion, while preventing` down-drafts and a5 entrance of rain, snow and the like directly downward. into the chimney. The removability of the hood permits of its ready rencwal, and said hood is preferably formed of an elongated rectangular sheet oil metal having an. upwardly arched intermediate port-ion ll and inclined. ends l2 to readily shed rain and the like. The hood plate is a greater area than that oli the base block so as to project outwardly ot the sides ol. the latter and olfectively exclude the rain and the like from the interior of the chimney and shed the same outwardly of the sides o'f the latter.
rlhe upper ends oit thc posts 9 pass through openings in the hood plate 10 at the juncture of the inclined. ends 19. with the arched portion 1l, and in the 'forms oil the invention shown in Figures 1 and 3 the hood is clamped between pairs el' nuts 13 removably and adjustably threaded on the upper ends of the posts 9.
In the form of the invention shown in Figure a, metallic spacing and Jroteetin,ef sleeves 14 are placed on the posts 9 with their lower ends resting on the top of the base block (l, while the hood is removably clamped down against the upper ends of the sleeves la by fill nuts 15 applied to the projecting upper ends of the posts 9. In the form of the invention shown in Figure 5, the nut members 8 are integrally connected by horizontal bars 16 which aid in properly positioning the nut members and reinforce the base block. Otherwise, the forms of Figures 4 and 5 are the same as the form of Figure 1.
Minor changesmay be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the in -vention as claimed.
What I claim as new is:
1. A chimney cap comprising a molded concrete baseblock having a flue passage and providedy with upright corner posts, a hood mounted on the upper ends of the corner posts, said hood embod ing a-metallic plate having an upwardly arclied intermediate portion an'dinclined ends and pairs of nuts threaded on the upper ends of the corner posts between which the hood is removably clamped, saidcorner posts passing through the hood at the juncture of the inclined ends of the hood with the arched intermediate portion thereof. y
2( A chimney cap of the class described comprising a precast concrete base block of truncated pyramidical configuration having a flue passage, a metallic frame embedded centrally in said block and provided at its corners with screw-threaded holes.r said concrete block having vertical bores in alineinent with said screw-threaded holes, a plurality elf between the down-bent ends and the longitudinally bowed central portion being' provided with openings through which the upper screw-threaded ends of said rods project` said clamping nuts engaging opposite sides of' said plate and securing the latter on the upper ends of the rod.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signa ture JOHN J. MATLEVISII.
