1 Claim. (Cl. 9867) This invention relates to chimney draft regulators and the object of the invention is to provide an improved chimney draft regulator in the form of a single unitary casting with adjusting means for regulating the cross area of the chimney and adapted to be mounted on top of the chimney and secured to the chimney liner.
The invention is embodied in a chimney draft regulator in the form of a rectangular casting with wind deflecting surfaces. On the two sides of the casting are provided securing means for mounting the regulator upon the chimney. The two other opposite sides of the regulator casting are provided with flaps or wings adjustable from outside the chimney for the purpose of adjusting the cross area of the chimney so as to provide the proper draft for any type of burning unit installed in the house. In the accompanying drawing illustrating the invention:

My invention is embodied in a single unitary casting which forms wind deflecting surfaces and within the casting are provided draft regulating means. The unit has four walls 3, 3 and 4, 4. The walls are undercut as at 5 so as to fit and be mounted upon the liner 6 of the chimney '7. Chimney liners are almost all of standard size so that a regulator will fit most any chimney.
The casting forms a vertical wall 8 the insides of which are alined with the chimney liner 6 as shown. The casting is also formed with an outside depending Wall 9 below the undercut at 5. The wall 9 fits around the liner 6.
The wall 9 is formed with a curved surface 10 which extends outwardly underneath a flat horizontal wall 11. The surface 10 functions as a wind deflecting surface which deflects the wind downwardly away from the chimney.
The casting 3, 4 is preferably cemented to the chimney liner 6 as indicated at 12, that is, the cement is applied to the top surface of the liner before the casting is set in position as will be understood. The two opposed walls 3, 3 of the casting have riveted thereto, as at 13, strips of metal 14 which extend below the undercut 5 and serve as additional securing means for the regulator. In this manner the Wall of the liner is confined between the casting walls and the strips 14 as shown. The lower ends of the strips 14 may be corrugated or bent so as to grip the insides of the liner for better security. Such corrugations are not shown.
2,900,893 Patented Aug. 25, 1959 The two other walls 4, 4 of the casting carry the area adjusting means. To each of the walls 4, 4 there is riveted as at 17, the immovable supporting base 16 of the adjuster 16, 18. The adjuster is in the form of a folded or bent metal piece forming the base member 16 and the movable wing 18. The latter may be moved with relation to the fixed member 18 by bolts 19 with nuts 2h accessible from the outside. Thus, by turning the bolts, the wings 18 may be moved closer together or farther apart to dimension the cross area of the chimney and thereby regulate the draft. When the regulator is installed, the service man adjusts the positions of the wings 18 in accordance with the draft. which is required by the burning unit of the house.
After securing the regulator to the chimney, either directly to the linerthereof or by using a short extension as at 21, the movable wings 18 are adjusted so that the cross area of the regulator is dimensioned to suit the burning or heating unit of the house. Thereafter, the regulator functions automatically. The wind, which otherwise would blow down into the chimney and cause discomfort in the house, is deflected away from the chimney by the sides 3 and 1% of the casting so that it will not blow into the chimney. All in all, it has been found that a regulator provided with the adjoining surfaces described and according to this invention prevents downdraft and is a fuel economizer.
I claim:
A chimney draft regulator comprising in combination with a chimney having a chimney liner extending above the top thereof, a rectangular casting of a form and dimension to fit upon and to be mounted upon said chimney liner to serve as a main supporting element of the device, said casting'having an inner undercut ledge on all its sides to be cemented to and upon the upper surface of said chimneyliner with the inner walls of said casting flush with the inner walls of the chimney liner, said casting having upon two of its opposed inner walls metal strips riveted to said walls and extending downward within said casting to contact said liner below the undercut ledge therein, said casting forming on all its outsides three distinct surfaces adjacent to each other, said surfaces consisting of a first lowest inwardly curved surface, a second vertical upper surface and a third horizontal intermediate surface joining the said two other surfaces, said casting having on its other two opposed inner sides draft regulating members, each of which consists of an immovable base member riveted to the upper portion of the inner wall of said casting and an integral movable wing member joined to said base member at the bottom thereof, the upper edges of said base and said movable members being substantially flush with the upper edges of the casting and means accessible from outside the chimney and engaging said movable wing members for moving the latter with relation to each other to regulate the draft opening of the said chimney.
