Description

March 1955 W. A. NORRIS COMBINED CIGARETTE CASE AND MATCH PACKAGE Filed Nov. 14, 1952 747244441 v.A Mme/s,
IN VEN TOR.
United States Patent COMBINED CIGARETTE CASE AND MATCH PACKAGE William A. Norris, Alhambra, Calif.
Application November 14, 1952, Serial No. 320,501
1 Claim. (Cl. 206--48) This invention relates to a combined cigarette case and match package holder.
The general object of the invention is to provide con venient means for holding a package of matches upon a cigarette container.
A more specific object of the invention is to provide a cigarette container or case which has novel means thereon for holding a match package.
Another object of the invention is to provide a cigarette case or container which has a novel match package engaging clip member thereon.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is an isometric showing my invention;
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 with the parts in another position;
Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 33, Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing a modification;
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing a further modification; and
Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on line 66, Fig. 5.
Referring to the drawing by reference characters I have shown my invention as embodied in a cigarette case which is indicated generally as at 10. This case, as shown, includes a body 11 and a cover 12 which is pivoted as at 13 to swing to one side to allow access to the cigarette within the case.
The case may be made of metal, plastic or other material and may be made of any desired type. Upon the front of the case I arrange a clip member 14. This clip member 14 includes a front portion 15 and parallel end flanges 16 which are of equal length. The flanges engage the body of the case to space the front 15 from the front of the case to provide a recess 17. Ears 18 integral with the flanges 16 extend through holes 20 in the front of the case and are bent as shown in Fig. 3 to hold the clip member in place. The clip member is provided with a slot 21 into which integral tongues 22 extend from the top of the clip member.
The clip member is preferably made of resilient mate rial such as metal or plastic and the tongues 22 are normally bent inwardly as shown in Fig. 2 towards the front of the case so that they will tightly engage the lower end of a match package 25, to be presently described.
The match package includes a body 26 and a cover 27 which is integral with and is hinged to the body portion 26 by fold line 28.
The cover 27 is inserted in the recess 17 and is moved downwardly therein until its lower portion is engaged by the tongues 22 of the clip 14.
The match package includes the usual match strips 29 which are held to the body 26 by a staple 30 which passes through a flap 31 integral with the body and also passes through the base of the matches 29 and through the body 26. The flap 31 includes a lower portion 32 which includes the usual match striking surface.
In use after the match package has been moved to the position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing, the package is folded along the line 28 as shown in Fig. 1 and the flap portion 32 is inserted in the lower end of the recess 17 whereupon the entire match package is firmly held in the recess 17.
To remove a match, the body 26 is hinged upwardly about the fold line 28 to the position in Fig. 2. The desired match is then removed and may be lighted after which the package is restored to the position shown in Fig. 1, in the manner previously described.
2,703,173 Patented Mar. 1, 1955 In Fig. 4, I show a modification of my invention wherein parts similar to those previously described are designated by single primed reference numerals. In this modification the body 11 has a telescoping cover 12.
In the modification the clip member 14 extends transversally of the package instead of longitudinally. Otherwise the construction and operation is the same as that of the type previously described.
In Figs. 5 and 6, I show a further modification of the invention at 40. In this modification the case 41 has an integral cover 42, the free end of which may be inserted in a slot 43. The clip member 44 is similar to the clip 14 and includes a front portion 45 which has fianges 46 thereon to space the front portion 45 from the front of the case to provide a recess 47. Tongues 48 on the front pass through slots 50 in the case and are bent over within the case to hold the clip member in place. The clip member includes a slot 51 into which resilient tongues 52 similar to, but shorter than the tongues 22 extend.
In the further modification a match package 53 has a flap 54 secured by a hinge line 55 to the front 56. The front 56 also includes an upper flap 57 which is secured to the front by a hinge line 58. The match strip 59 is secured to the cover by a staple 60. The front 56 includes a striking surface 62.
In use the flap 54 is inserted into the lower end of the recess 47 and is moved upwardly until it assumes the position shown in Fig. 5 wherein it is engaged by the resilient tongues 52. The front 56 is then moved about the hinge line 55 and is swung so that the flap 57 is aligned with the recess 47 whereupon the flap 57 is forced down into the upper end of the recess 47 so that the parts assume the position shown in Fig. 5.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that I have invented a novel cigarette and match package which can be economically manufactured and which is highly efl'icient for its intended purpose.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
A combined cigarette case and match package comprising a cigarette holding case having an open end portion and having a cover therefor, said case having a plane front face, a clip member made of resilient material, said clip member including a front portion, said front portion having an integral bent flange at each end thereof, said flanges engaging the front face of the case to space the front portion of the clip member from the case to provide a recess between the front face of the case and the front portion of the clip member, said recess being open at each end, said cigarette case front face having spaced slots therein, ears integral with the flanges and extending through said spaced slots and engaging the inside of the front of the case to hold the clip member in place, said clip member having a slot in its front face, spaced, planar, parallel, resilient tongues integral with the clip member at one end, said tongues at the other end being spaced from the adiacent portion of the clip member front portion, a match package including a body, said body being longer than the height of said clip, said body including a cover integral with and hinged to the body by a fold line, said match package cover being inserted in one end of the aforesaid recess, said match package cover engaging the free ends of said tongues, said match package including a strip of matches secured to said body, said matches being disposed parallel. to said tongues, said match package body having a flap hinged to the end thereof which is opposite to said cover, said flap being inserted in the other end of said recess.
