UNITED STATES PATENT AOFFICE4 -2 Claims.

This invention relates to carrying cases or kits and has special reference to a cigarette case or kit.

One important object of the invention is to e improve the general construction of devices of this character.

A second important object of the invention is to provide an improved case for this purpose having a body of rigid material and of the size and proper lo shape to accommodate a pack of cigarettes.

` A third important object of the invention is to provide an improved case for this purpose wherein the cigarettes may be carried and which will protect them from breaking or crumbling and la from perspiration. f

A fourth important object of the invention is to provide a suitable match holder in combination with such a case.

A fth important object of the invention is to provide an improved case of this class having a hook or the like for securing the case in position on or to a waist belt, the pocket and other places, the hook being so arranged and positioned as to permit free access to the contents of the 2s case, both cigarettes and matches, when the case is supported by the hook.

A sixth important object of the invention is to provide a novel case of the class having its bottom provided with a finger opening to permit ready ejection of the cigarette package from the case.

A seventh important object of the invention is to provide a novel orm of cigarette and match holding case having a exible cover adapted, when closed, to cover b oth the cigarettes and the matches, the cover and case being provided with coacting snap button means for vsecuring the' cover in closed position.

With the above and other objects in view as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically claimed.

In the accompanying drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts .in the several views, and:

In the embodiment of the invention here shown the case Ais illustrated as being made from material such as genuine leather, imitation leather, l5 textile material, fibre, rubber, paper, wood, metal or any other suitable material. Preferably in the form here shown the case is made up of a plurality of layers of material. This case has a rectangular back l0 vfrom the side edges oi which Bil extend the side portions l1. From the bottom edge of the back extends the bottom l2 and the front wall 13 extends upwardly from the forward edge of the bottom and is provided with side flaps le which overlap the sides ll and are secured thereto as by the stitching 15. From the top edge of the rear wall 10 extends a cover which consists of a top portion 16, connected directly to the said top edge, and a front portion l'l connected to the front edge of the portion 16, the t0 top portion 16 being suitably dened from the back wall and front portion 17 by fold lines 18, creased or otherwise formed in the material to permit easy bending at these places.

As shown in Figures 6 and 9, the case may be made from a laminated blank having the sides, front, back and bottom layers of three layers l0 and 10, the layers 10' forming the outer surface and lining of the case and the layer 10" being of still material. For instance, the layers 10' may be of thin leather and the layer 10 of bre board. In such case the outer layers 10 are continued at the top. beyond the bre layer, to form the parts 16 and 17 which thus consist of but two layers of iexible material, a row of stitching 17' extending around the periphery of these parts to prevent any separation of the layers. Similarly, thetop edges of the front i3 and side portions 14 are provided with stitching 13' for the same purpose. The case thus formed is of proper shape height, extends a strap 19 which has its lends se,

cured to the iront wall 13 by stitch lines 20 at the ends of the strap, the middle portion of the strap being thus left free from the wall 13.' This strap forms a match holder and, in use, the cover of an ordinary paper match packet M is slipped up behind the strap so that the latter lies between the back of the cover and the matches them'- selves, the striker strip being thus exposed. The portion 17 of the cover is of such size as to fully cover and protect the matches when the case is closed and the cover and front wall are provided with coacting snap button parts 21 for holding the case cover securely in closed position.

As best shown in Figures 1, 3, and 5, the bottom 12 is provided with an opening 22 of proper size to admit a linger so that the packet C may be pushed up, as in Figure 3, for removal from the case as desired.

A U-shaped spring wire clip or hook 23 has a pair of oiset base portions 23 at the ends of its legs and these are secured to the back wall 10 at the center of the top portion thereof so that the clip or hook may be engaged on a belt, trousers band or other suitable place. By this particular arrangement of the hook on the back of the case the case cover is left free and convenient for opening and closing and access may be had to the cigarettes and matches without removing the case from the place where it is attached.

In the form of the invention shown in Figures 7 and 8 it will be seen that the strap 19 is replaced by an integral strap 23a formed by cutting two parallel slits 24 transversely of the front portion 13. In this form the strap is pushed out slightly when it is desired to attach the match pocket.

As shown in Figure 10, the clip or hook may be omitted and in this form it is intended that the device is to be carried in ones pocket.

It is 'obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material spirit thereof. It is not, therefore, desired to conne the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is desired to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:

l. A blank for cigarette cases formed of a pair 'of layers of flexible leather-like material, said layers constituting inner and outer layers respectively and each including a rectangular back portion, rear side portions of rectangular form extending from the side edges of the back portion and lof equal length thereto, bottom tabs extending from the lower edges of the rear side portion, a bottom portion of rectangular form extending from the bottom edge of the back portion and of equal width thereto, a front portion extending from the edge of the bottom portion opposite the back portion and of equal width and height to the back portion, front side portions extending from the side edges of the front portion, all of said portions and `tabs having between them a middle layer of stii material such as `bre board,-each of the iiexible blanks having a top portion of rectangular form extending from the top edge of the back portion and of equal width thereto, and a front iiap extending from the ledge of the top portion opposite the back portion and of equal width thereto, the top portions and front aps of said blanks being in contact throughout and being stitched together at the side edges of the top and front portions and at the end of the top portion.

2. Cigarette case formed from the blank of claim 1 with the front and back portions parallel to each other and at right angles to the top, bottom and side portions\and the tabs overlapping 'the bottom portion at the sides thereof, said front side portions at each side of the case overlapping the corresponding rear side portions and stitched thereto, the front iiap overlapping the front portion, and means for detachably connecting the free end of the front ap and lower part of the front portion.
