OVERALLS.
N0.181,155. Patented Aug.15, 1876.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE R. EAGER, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN OVERALLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 181,155, dated August 15, 1876; application filed June 22, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEonGE R. EAGER, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Overalls, Pants, and
taken through the waistband of a garment to which my improvement has been applied; and Fig. 2, a side elevation of the same, the lower portion of the garment being torn off. In these views but one string or cord is represented as being used for the adjustment of the garment to the waist of the wearer. Figs. 3 and 4 are similar views of the same garment, only differing in having two cords for a simultaneous adjustment of the garment on both sides. Fig. 5 represents a detached View of the clutch-hook that holds the cord.
My improvement relates to garments provided with waistbands, such as blouses or jumpers, overalls, drawers, pants, 850., being more especially intended for workmens blouses and overalls, as its simplicity of construction and effectiveness enable them to be produced at a reduced cost.
The improvement consists in constructing the waistband of the garment with a series of eyelet-holes arranged at regular intervals, either partially or entirely around, and then providing the waistband thus armed with one or two interlacing cords, the inner end or ends of which are stitched fast to the inside of the waistband.
To enable others skilled in the art to make, construct, and use my improved garment, I will describe it in detail.
The improvement is represented in the drawing as being applied to a pair of overalls, of which A represents the body, and B the waistband. In the waistband are set or secured a series of eyelets, a, at regular intervals apart. In this case they are shown as extending around the rear portion and sides of the band; but they may be extended farther around, if desired. In the plan shown in Figs. 1 and 2, where but one cord or string, 0, is used, one end of the string is secured to the inside of the waistband on one side. The other end is then passed through the eyelet adjoining the fastened end, from the inside outward, and thence back again through the next, until it has passed the whole of them, it passing outward through the last. It is now ready for adjustment, either by simply tightening it sufficiently, and then tying a knot on it close to the last eyelet-hole, when the operation is complete, or, as shown in Fig. l, by passing the knot thus adjusted over and between the arms of a clutch-hook, b, secured to the waistband in the immediate vicinity of the last eyelet-hole, or in any of the ways devised by me, and for which I have applications now pending before the Patent Office.
In Figs. 3 and 4, two cords, d and e, are shown as being used. Each of these is secured to the Waistband and interlaced through the same eyelet-holes a, in precisely the same manner as the cord 0 of Figs. 1 and 2. In adjustin g the garmentwith these they are pulled upon, and a knot adjusted on each, as. in the case of cord 0, and may either be used with or without the aid of the clutch-hook b, or equivalent device; but I prefer to use the hook.
Having described my improvement, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is A garment having a waistband provided with a series of eyelet-holes, a, and with a cord or cords, interlaced and arranged sub stantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I after my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE It. EAGER. Witnesses:
J OHN LOTHROP, J. F. BINGHAM.
