SHIRT.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY l/V. STOKES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ahoskie, in the county of Hertford and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shirts, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to personal wearing garments and more particularly to outer shirts.

The object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character having means whereby the free ends of the suspenders may be engaged with the trousers while the suspenders are worn beneath the shirt and out of sight. Heretofore, shirts of this character have been constructed so as to conceal the body of the suspenders while the ends were free to be buttoned to the trousers by providing slits or holes in the shirt at the required points. In order to wear this type of shirt it was necessary to first put the suspenders on, then the shirt and then the trousers. After the shirt had been properly tucked into the trousers the wearer had to fish for the ends of the sus penders and draw them through the apertures.

It is the object of this invention to avoid the above named ditliculties and broadly speaking consists in slitting the shirt longitudinally at suitable intervals for the reception of the suspenders, whereby the suspenders may remain upon the trousers at all times and the shirt may be put on and its ends tucked into the trousers while the suspenders are attached.

Further objects of the invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this appli cation, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the shirt. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation. Fig. 3 is an elevation showing the shirt applied.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 represents the body of the shirt which is provided in its front with a plurality of slits 2 suitably bound upon their edges, as at 3, to prevent fraying and which extend from Specification of Letters Patent.

the waist line throughout the length of the skirt or portion of the shirt below the waist. There are two of these slits upon each side of the center of the shirt in the front and in the rear there is a slit 4 upon each side of the center, the tail being square. The two slits on each side of the center in the front of the shirt produce tabs 5 which enter between the suspender tabs on either side of the front and a similar tab 6 is formed by the slits 4 which enters between the tabs in the rear of the suspenders.

In practice the trousers and suspenders are put on, the shirt then put on and while the trousers are still unbuttoned the tabs 5 and 6 are tucked into the trousers between the tabs of the suspender ends and the remaining portions of the shirt also tucked thereinto so that the end of the slots is engaged with the threads which hold the buttons on the trousers, the buttons being arranged upon the inside thereof. The trousers are then buttoned as is usual. It will, of course, be understood that any type of shirt, including the coat shirt, may be constructed in this manner. When the buttons are on the outside of the trousers the shirt will fall over the same in a blouse effect and conceal the buttons.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is A shirt having a pair of spaced parallel slits to provide relatively narrow tongues adjacent the sides at the lower front end thereof, said tongues being adapted to be passed between the front supporting tabs at the lower end of the suspenders, the lower backportion of the shirt having a pair of spaced slits to provide a centrally located tongue adapted to be passed between the rear supporting tabs of the suspenders whereby the suspenders may be permanently secured to the lower garment and the shirt put on by the wearer without removing or interfering with said suspenders.
