noon HOLDER.'
Application led August 30, 1926. Serial No. 132,499.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in holdersl for f retaining swinging doors in open position, the invention aiming to provide a holder preferably for use in association with automobile garage doors so as to permit the operator of a machine to drive the same into the garage without any danger of the-door swinging in the direction of the car, which frequently results in damage to fenders, the breakage of t windows, et cetera.
One of the main objects of the invention is to provide a holder that is extremely simple of construction, inexpensive of manufacture, and highly efficient in operation. Other objects will become apparent as th nature of the invention will be understood, the same comprising the novel form, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts in Vboth of the views:
Figure 1 is a detail longitudinal section of the holder, andl Figure 2 is a` perspective thereof. Now having particular reference to the drawing, wherein there is'disclosed the most preferred` embodiment of the invention with which I am at this time familiar, 5 represents a container preferably of rectangular configurationl as disclosed. This container is open at its top side in actual practice, is tol be arranged within a pit formed in the floor of the garage adjacent the wall thereof toward which the garage door will swing when being moved to open position.
After the container has been arranged within said pit, a cover plate Gis disposed thereon1 which cover plate is of greater width and length than the container, as disclosed in both'the figures. Opposite ends of the cover plate the same are provided 4with openings 7 7 so that the plate may be secured to the floor surface by bolts, screws or other fastening means 8-8.
, Said cover plate 6 is formed with yan opening that is of predetermined width and ofa length equivalent to the length of the'container 5. Pivoted within the container at the top side and adjacent one end as at 9 is y an elongated metallic plate 10, that is formed at the pivoted end thereof, and at its top side with an inclinedy latch head 11 upon which the lower edge of the door will engage for forcing the Aplate downwardly against the vaction ofan expansible conical spring 12 bearing at one end upon the bottom wall` of the container 5, and at its upper end upon the under side of the plate 10 adjacent the free end thereof. Thefree e'nd of the plate is formed with a transverse lug 13 that will engage beneath yan inwardly directed flange 14 upon the adjacent end of the container for limiting vthe upward swinging movement of the plate within the container.
The free end of therplate 10 is formed with a vertical lfoot piece 15 so that the plate can be lmanually forced downwardly against the action of the spring 12 for obviously permitting the door to be swungv 1n `a reverse direction over the inclined head 11.
The detail operation of a device ofk this character will'be at once apparent by reviewing thek foregoing specification in accompaniment with the present drawing, and
.even though I have herein shown and described the device as consisting of certain structural elements it is nevertheless to bev understood that somechanges may be made therein without affecting the spirit and-scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters PatentA is :-A
In a. door holder of the character described, a container open at its top side only, a lever pivoted at one end within the top side of the casing and at one end thereof, a head formed upon the top surface of the lever adjacent the pivoted end thereof and inclining upwardly from said pivoted end, means within the container for normally maintaining the lever in horizontal position within the open 'side of the container, a vertical foot piece rising from the free end of the lever'being taller than `the head and having a lateral extension at its upper end extending away from the free end of *thev lever, said free'end of the leverbeing provided with a stop projectionk and said container being provided with a stop'projection with which the first projection abuts when the lever is in a horizontal position. l
In testimony whereof I aix my signature FRANK CHIAPPARELLI.
