Description

WEATHER STHIPPING FOR DOORS.
LEU umm/1921.

Patented fiele. 2'?, 1923.
UNHTFL@ STATES' FRANK JAMES KENNARD, OF EGGS, OKLAHOMA.
WEATHER STRPPING FOR DOORS.
Application led July 13,
T all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, FRANK JAMES KEN- NARD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Beggs, in the county of Okmulgee and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful In'iprovements in Teather Stripping for Doors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a thresh-hold for doors.
The object of the invention is to provide means whereby a thresh-hold may be carried by the door with which the same is associated and automatically raised and lowered with the opening and closing of the door respectively.
It is also an object of the invention that the means for raising and lowering the thresh-hold will operate in a positive and certain manner and will not be subject to getting out of order.
Other objects will hereinafter appear in the detailed description to follow.
The invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the application of the invention to a door and showing the door when in its open position,
Figures 2 and 3 are vertical sectional views of a portion of the lower end of the door to which my invention has been applied and illustrates the thresh-hold when in its raised and lowered position, respectively,
Figure 4 is a transverse section of the threslrhold and shows the operating shaft therefor,
Figure 5 is a detail perspective view of the thresh-hold and its associated supports and operative means.
Referring to the drawings more particulai-ly, 1.0 indicates generally a door which is suitably hinged to a casing 11 the lowermost hinge being shown at 12.
In carrying out the present invention the lower edge of the door is provided with a channel shaped recess 13 which extends the entire length of said edge and the bottom being inclined toward the inner side of the door as shown. The outer end of the recess` 13 is partly closed by the lower end of a plate member 14, said plate member being provided with suitable screw openings 15 1921.V Serial NO. 484,482.
through which screws may be extended for securing the same to the outer edge of the door.' In the present instance the hinge 12 is positioned adjacent the lower edge of the door, as shown and between the leaf 111 of the hinge and the plate 14 there is journaled a shaft 16, and upon said shaft there is positioned a split sleeve 17 which extends substantially the'entire lengthof the shaft the divided longitudinal edges of said sleeve each terminating in an extension plate 18. Between the extension plates 18 there is secured a strip of sheeting 19 preferably of rubber by the means of rivets as shown. A central portion of the sleeve 17 is removed and at this point a coil spring 22 encircles the shaft 16. One end of the coil spring is disposed beneath the lowermost extension plate 18 as at 23, Figure 5, while the other end 24 ofthe coilr spring is extended into .the base portion of the door 10 and held"L against removal.
The leaf 14C of the hinge 12 is provided with a recess 26 which is triangular in shape and its lower portion is in register with the channel recess 13 in the lower edge of the door 10. The other leaf 27 of the hinge 12 has struck outwardly therefrom a tang 2S which is likewise triangular in sha-pe and adapted to enter t-he recess 26 upon the closing of the door 10.
The operation of the present device is as follows: Upon the door being closed as shown in Figure 1 the slee-ve 17 together with the strip 19 carried thereby are positioned as shown in Figure 2. The sleeve 17 is held in this position lby the tang 28 engaging upon the associated end of an extension plates 18, and as seen in l `igure 2 the extension plates 1S and rubber strip 19 form a complete closure between the space of the lower edge of the door and the floor with which the door is associated. Now upon opening the door the tang 28 will be gradually withdrawn from the recess 26 and likewise from upon the uppermost extension plate 18 of the sleeve 17, and the shaft 16 will be permitted to rotate in an upward direction urged by the spring 22 and the extension plates 18 of the sleeve 17 together with the rubber sheeting 19 will be brouglit to the position as shown in Figure 3, where the same will be held by the spring When the door is again closed the tang 2S will enter the recess 26 and engage the top end surface ot the uppermost extension plate 18 and f igain move the rubber sheeting 19 to the position as shown in Figure Q.
lVhile I have shown and described the preferred form oi my invention it is to be understood that I am aware of the fact that the construction, combination and arrange ment ot parts may be changed by 'those skilled in the art without departing' from the spirit of my invention, as indicated by the appended claims.
I claim: 1 A l. ncombination, a door frame, a door hinged thereto Aby leaf hinges, one of said hinges being adjacent the lower edge of; the door, a shaft journaled upon the lower edge ol" the door longitudinally thereof, a radial extension carried by the shaft to serve as a weather strip for said door, means for normally and ryieldably holfjling the radial yextension in `raised position, and meansy earried by the door hinge last mentionedadapted to engage upon said radial extension for inovingthe same to its lowered position when said door' is brought to its closed position. l
2. In combination, a door frame, a door hinged thereto by leaf hinges, one bfsaid hinges being adjacent the lower edge of the door, a. platey secured upon the edge of the door opposite to that eng-aged by the leal'I of the hinge last mentioned, a rod journaled between said plate and the lea-f of the said leaf hinge which is secured to the door, a radial extension carried by said rod adapted to serve as a weather strip for the lower edge of the. door, means for yieldably holding the radial extension in its raised position, and means carried `by the other leali of the door hinge last mentioned adapted to engage upon the radial extension and move the same to its lowered position upon the closing of the door..
3. In combination, a door frame, a door hinged thereto by leahinges, one of Said hinges `being adjacent the lower edge ol the door, a plate secured upon the edge ot the door opposite to thatengaged by the leaf' hinge last mentioned, a rod 'journaled between said plate and the leaf of the said leafli hinge which is secured to the door` a radial extension Carried by said rodadapted toserve as a weather strip for the lowery edge of the door, means foryieldably holding the radial extension in its raised positien, anda tang extending from the other leal ot the door hinge last mentioned adaptA ed to e gage upon the radial extension and more the same to lits lowered position upon the closing of thedoon Y i FRANKJAMES Kaliman
