Patented Nov. 24, 1931 UNITED STATES WILLIAM F. STAGGERS, OF MANNINGTON, WEST VIRGINIA DEVICE FOR HOLDING DOORS WHILE FITTING LOCKS, ETC.
Application filed February 15, 1929. Serial No. 340,211.
The object of my invention is to provide a novel and useful device, particularly for carpenters for use in placing under a door in open position for holding the door against movement while mortising in looks or repairing latches, catches or any device used in fastening the door. It is also an object of my invention to provide a device that will hold the door firmly while making measurement markings on the door to indicate the correct position in which a lock must be installed so that a perfect fit may be made.
I attain these and other objects of my invention by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of same; Fig. 3 is a section on line 33 of Flg. 1, and
Figlis a side elevation of the invention,
reduced size, in'use to support a door.
Like numerals indicate like parts in each of the several views.
Referring to Figure 1 of the drawings, the character D indicates a door which is being held'in stationary position by a suitable number of prongs or projections 2 on plate 1 of my device, any desired number of projections being provided, preferably being arranged about one-quarter of an inch distance from each other. Plate 1, which preferably is of spring steel, has a downwardend portion 3 with teeth 1 or other suitable frictional element to engage the floor and prevent slipping. I provide a jack 7 consisting of a handle or lever 1.0 having bifurcated ends 11 which preferably may be provided with extensions 8 on which the wheels 9 are mounted. The plate 1 is operatively connected with the jack by means of the loop or eye 5 through V which the rod or pivot element 6 extends.
In operation the plate is slid under the bottom of adoor, as illustrated-in Figs. 1 and 4, until it contacts with the door and the handle or lever 10 which initially was in the dotted line position shown in Fig. 1, is swung to the full line position shown in that figure, thereby raising the plate 1, the teeth 2 of which engage the bottom of the door and firmly hold it so that the door is held stationary while the carpenter is fitting on a lock, door handle or otherwise working on the door after it has been hung.
What I claim is: i
In a device of the class described, the combination of a resilient plate having projections to engage the bottom of a door and having a toothed end to engage the floor, and a jack member pivotally connected to the other end of the plate for raising same and holding it in raised position to support the door in a fixed position.
