Application filed April 21,
it and an upstanding Harige integral with the stationary portion of the device.
Another object of the inventionis to provide a door holdingdevice having a jaw integral withv a pivotal member having projections adapted to extend one on either side of the door when in'held position, so that the jaw may be depres-ed and the door released from either'side of the latter.
lith these andA other objects in vview which will become apparent as the specificationproceeds, the Iinvention consistsV in certain novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described Vwith the aid of the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 illustrates a vertical section Aof the invention and portion of a door held between the and the flange integral with the stationary portionof the device.
Figure 2 shows a verticalsection of the invention with the jaw depressed and por-.
tion of a door passing over it.A
Figure 3 is a plan view of the invention, and
Figure 4 shows a diagrammatic view of the holding device so placed as to hold garage doors open.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates'an Aangle-shaped plate the horizontal portion 2 of which is secured as to a block 3. The vertical ilange et of the plate forms a stationary stop. rllhe pivotal member 5 is provided with an opening 6 for the flange 4 to pass through, and a cotter pin 7 extends through the sides ofY they pivotal member 5 and through the plate 1 thereby constituting the fulcrum about which vthe member 5 turns. The jaw 8 integral with the pivotal member is so positioned with regard to the flange from the top of the jaw 8. That portion of 4L that the intervening distance is slightly greater than the thickness of the door to be held. 9 indicates a downwardly inclined portion of the member 5 extending outwards the pivotal member which is arranged over the horizontal portion 2 of the plate 1 is preferably provided with depending flanges 192e. serien Ne. 10e/134.
10 at its sides so as to minimize the possibility of dirt, snow and the like accumulating under the pivotal member and renderingy it inoperative. The end 12 of the pivotal member projects beyond the plate 1 so as to afford a toehold for raising thatend of the member Vand thereby lowering the jaw 8. 5a indicates a stop, in this case integral with the Vunderside of the member 5 and adapted to strike the top of the plate 1 to limit the swing of the memberein one direction. It will also be noted that the pivotal member is so balanced that the 8 ison the lighter end; because of this the device alwaysreturns to the position shown in Figure l.
The outer end of the downwardly inclined portion 9 is lower than the bottom of the jaw 8 and should be so placed that as a door swings into the position in which it is to be held the lower edge ofthe latter, or a suitable notch cut therein, will contact the inclined surface of the portion 9 and depress the pivotal member until it has swung beyond the jaw 8, then the latter rises, due to the balance of the pivotal member, and the door is held between the jaw and the flange 4. e
VVhenritl is desired to release the door either the inclined surface 9`is pressed down a second holding device 21 so placed as to 9 hold the door open when desired. The lower edges of the doors are provided with notches 22 which are engaged byV the holding devices.
While a preferred embodiment of the 1nvention has been described and shown, it 1s "understood that the construction is susceptible to such changes as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secureV by Letters Patent is:
1 A ydoor holding device-comprising a stationary plate havingfa vertical flange adapted to form a stop,.a memberpivotally mounted on said plate and having an opening therethrmigh for Said rertieal flange to pass through, and a jaw on seid member so spaced from said vertical flange as to hold a door therebetween, said member being so mounted that` it tends at all times to assuma n substantially horizontal position.
9. A door holding device as described in claim l wherein that portion of the member which covers the plate is provided with downward flangeextending below said plate.
3. A door holding device comprising a stationary plete having a flange at right angles to its length adapted to form a stop, a member plvotally mounted on said plate having an opening therethrough for said lnnge'to pass through a aw, on said member the holding surface ot which is opposed to said flange, the end of said member in proximity to said j aw having a downwardly and outwardly tapered surface terminating et its outer end below the jaw holding surface, the oppoSite end of said member extending berond the end of said plate, and a stop to limit the turning movement of said member.
