BENJAMIN E. D. STAFFORD ANDETHAN lf. DDDS, OFPITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANA, y ASSIGNORS T FLANNERY BQLT COMPANY, 0I? PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
STAY-norm finiva in,
' Application `iled September vBe it known that We, BENJAMIN E. D. STAFFORD and ETHAN I.`Donns, citizens of the United States,` and residents oit Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State oli ennsylvania, have invented certain new `and useful lmprovements in Stay-Bolt Structures; and We do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrlption of the invention, such as vvlll enpertains to make and use the same.
This invention'relates to improvements in staybolt structures for bo1lers,-one object ot the invention being to provide a bearing member for the head of' a staybolt, havinga universally movable mounting in a boiler sheet whereby accurate alignment of the staybolt may be insured before the bearing member is made rigid With the boiler sheet and provide a simple and eliicient closure 'for the bearing member Which may be seated on the latter and made permanently rigid Witlifthe same.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features ot' construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed ont `in the claims.
The accompanying drawing is a sectional 'View shovvinglan embodiment olf our invention. l
1 represents a boiler' sheet provided With, an opening 2,.the major portion oil the Vwall ol which curved or rounded indicated at 3. The curved wall 3 serves as a seat vlor the curved or rounded portion et, oit a bearing sleeve or member f, the latter having an in* terior curved seat (i lor the rounded head 7 of a staybolt 8. p
By mounting the bearing` sleeve in the y opening in the boiler sheet so that it may be capableoii universal movement, said sleeve can be so adjusted as to insure accurate alignment 07E the staybolt with its points oir' connection with the respective boiler sheets, and When said sleeve shall have beenmade to assume such adjustment, .it will be ii'xedly united to the boiler sheet by a Weld 9; This weld surrounds the sleeve near Where the latter enters the opening inthe boiler sheet and effects a union which will, Aiu elieet,

Specification ofLetters Patent. Putigmbvll Italia@ @gltig-Mm,
1o, 191e. serial no. teased make the sleeve integral With the boiler sheet.
The bearing sleeve has such dimensions as to provide a clearance space 10 :tor the bolt head between the latter and al closure 11l on said sleeve. i
"The closure 11 is made in the form ot' a plate which may be concavo-convex and it is seated on the end tace 12 of the sleeve. To insure proper centering oit the closure, it may be made vvith a shoulder 13 Which may enter the end portion of the sleeve. The diameter of the plate or closure 1l appreciably less than the outside diameter of the outer end oi' the sleeve, and the space `between the peripheral Ytace of the closure and the peripheral edge ot the end ot the sleeve is occupied by a Weld lll which serves to permanently unite said closure to the sleeve andmalre it, in effect, an integral part of the same.
In order to permit the testing ot the bolt, the head of which is sealed Within the bearing sleeve or member, said bolt will be provided vvith a tell-tale hole 15 Which may eX- tend from the inner end of the bolt and terminate at its outer end Within the headed.
end thereof. i
Having Afully described our invention what We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, isz#- l.. r.llhe combination with a boiler sheet having an opening, oli a bearing member having initial. universal mounting on the wall, ojl'said opening and permanently sealed to the boiler sheet, said barring member permanently closed at its outer end, and a staybld titi
bolt having aheaded end mounted .in said te bearing` member and having` a tell-tale-hole extending fromwithin said headed end to `the other end of thebolt.
2. ln a staybolt structure, the combination with a boiler sheet having an opening therein, a bearing member mounted at said opening and sealed to the boiler sheet, and a staybolt having a head mounted Yin said bearn member, oil: a closure seated upon the endtace oi. said bearing member, and a weld uniting the peripheral :tace ot said closure tothe end 'face of the bearing member.
3. ln a staybolt structure, the combination with a boiler sheet having an opening me u therein,1 ol u bearing member having initial universally movable mounting in said opening, a Weld uniting Said bearing member to the boilel1 sheet, :i staybolt having a 110ml mounted in said bearing member, L plate Closure seated on the end face of the bearing member, and a Weld uniting the peripheral portion of the plate closure to said end face.
