SAMUEL H. RICE, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO 'KALAMAZOO LOOSE LEAF BINDER 00., OF KALAIVIAZOO, MICHIGAN.
BINDER DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL H. Bron, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Binder Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in binder devices.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide an improved binder device which facilitates the use of temporary binders or loose sheet holders, and particularly those used in machine accounting systems.
Second, to provide an improved binder which facilitates the handling or manipulation of loose record sheets.
Third, to provide an improved binder device which facilitates the manipulation and handling of temporary binders for the insertion and removal of the sheets therefrom.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The. invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invent-ion is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure'I is a perspective view of the holder of my improved binder device with the binder removed,- the holder being in its partially collapsed position.
Fig. II is a View, partially in vertical transverse section, with the holder adjusted to support the binder in its closed position. Fig. III is a view similar to that of Fig. II, illustrating the holder supporting a binder with a'less number of sheets than that shown in Fig. II.
Fig. IV is a view similar to that of Figs. II, and III, showing the holder supporting a binder with till fewer sheets.
Fig. V is a perspective view showing the holder members adjusted to receive the binder members and the binder members arranged therein, the sheets being all arranged on one binder member.
Fig. VI isqa: transverse vertical section Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 2d, 1918.
Divided and this application filed August 1,
with the center or supplemental member in position, part of the sheets being arranged in each holder member.
Fig. VII is a perspective view with the holder in extended position and the central or upplemental holder member in position.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the embodiment illustrated I provide a rectangular frame or base comprising sides 1, ends 2, and legs or corner uprights 8. The holder members, designated generally by the numerals 4 and 5, are pivoted at 6 between the end members of the frame or base. These holder members comprise the side members 7 and 8 and coacting end members 9 and 10, respectively. The end members and the side members of the structure illustrated are disposed at right angles to each other, the width of the end members being such that their edges clear when the holder members are swung to their collapsed or extended positions. The inner ends of the side members 7 and 8 are extended to provide stops 11 and 12- respectively. WVhen the holder members are swung to their extended position, as shown in Fig. VI, these stops engage coacting stops 13 and 14: on the base or frame. I/Vhen the holder members are fully collapsed the end member 10 engages the stop 14:, while the end member 9 engage the stop 15.
When swung to their erected positions, as shown in Figs. II, III and IV, the side members will engage the covers of a binder resting upon the end member's, supporting it in closed position, the weight of the binder resting on the end members within the pivots 6 tending to press the sides against the covers. 7
From the illustrations of Figs. II, III and nor edges. adap ed to. receiv he binding;
strips when the binder is closed. The sheets are also provided with holes 22 adapted to receive removable posts 23, substantially as shown in the Wigginton Patent #1,174,458, March '7, 1916. The end members are transversely slotted at 24 to receive these binding strips when adjusted to the position shown in Fig. V.
To complement or supplement the end members when adjusted to the position shown in Figs. V, VI and VII, I provide an A-shaped central or supplemental end member 25 having arms 26 and 27 secured to each other. The arm or part 26 of this supplemental member is adapted toedge abut the end member 10, while the other arm 27 overlaps the end member 9, as clearly shown. in Fig. VI, and abuts the filler block 28 disposed in the angle of the holder member 4. The filler or supplemental member is provided with hand holds 29 and with dowels 3O connecting it with the end mem ber 10.
In the structure illustrated the part 27 is disposed at an acute angle to the side 7 so that fanning or stepping of the upper edges of the sheets is secured to facilitate the fingering.
WVith this arrangement of parts, I secure a structure which may be readily adjusted to provide a pair of V-shaped holders adapted to support the binder members with sheets rest-ing thereon so that the loose sheets 20 may be transferred from one binder member to the other. This greatly facilitates the manipulation of the sheets in the making of records. To assist in alining the sheets on the holder members the supplemental mem- 'ber'25 is provided with guide ribs 31 with which the notches of the sheets may be engaged. I
Ihave not attempted to illustrate or describe certain modifications in structural details which I contemplate, as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which my invention relates to embody or adapt the same as may be desired.
The structural details of the binder are not illustrated as they form no part of my present invention.
Claims to the-holder proper aremade in my application for Letters Patent, filed June 15, 1917 Serial NO- 174c,919 this apof holders each adapted to receive one of the binder members with sheets resting thereon or to support the binderin its closed position resting upon the end members and the side members engaging the sides thereof, the said end members being slotted to receive the binding strips when the parts are in their extended position, and a removable supplemental member coacting with said end members and having a sheet guide thereon.
