LOOSE-LEAF BINDER FOR LEDGERS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 583,244, dated May 25, 1897.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J ACOB P. BOEHNER, a, citizen of the United States, and a resident of South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loose-Leaf Binders for Ledgers, &c., of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a binder especially designed for holding loose sheets, as ledgerleaves, bills, and separate sheets of paper, to be bound together in book form, and thus securely held in proper order to be filed away 1 or handled.

My invention consists, first, in novel means for connecting and adjusting back-clamping strips which are flexibly connected to the backboards in a well-known manner, and also in so forming the stub ends of the separate leaves that they will interlock in a novel manner with the devices which adjustably connect the back-clamping strip.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the binder, and Fig. 2 a sectional elevation through the back-clamp ing strips and their connecting devices and through a number of loose sheets held therein.

The binder is formed of two like sections A, each comprising back-clamping strips a a and backboards A, flexibly connected therewith in any Well-known. or preferred manner.

A connecting-plate B of rectangular crosssection is rigidly secured to one of the strips Ct at the middle thereof to project therefrom at right angles, and a sleeve 0, preferably of sheet metal, is fixed securely at one end to the opposite clamping-strip a to receive the plate B and telescope or slide thereon and is formed with a rectangular slot 1) therein to receive a set-bolt D, which screws into the plate B and is provided with a head and washer d to clamp the sleeve securely to the plate and admit of the adjustment of one upon the other. The ends of the clamping-strip also have tubular guide-rods E secured fixedly thereto, which snugly fit and telescope within corresponding tubular guide-rods E, secured at one end fixedly to the clampingstrip a of the binder. Spiral springs F are contained within the guide-rods E and E and serve to push or press the strips a and a apart, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, when the set-bolt D is released, and thus give ample space between the said clamping-strips to allow the separate sheets to be turned up at the sides,

as shown by dotted lines in said figure, when the sheets are attachedto the binder.

The sheets G are preferably made with a rectangular back notch or recess g to fit snugly around three sides of the plate B and with a slot g at either side thereof of a width corresponding to the diameter of the guiderods E E to receive said rods, which thus serve to securely unite the back edge of the leaves to the binder.

The back edge of the several leaves or sheets G are preferably folded over to form a double thickness of a width corresponding to the width of the clamping-strips, thus reinforcing the leaves where they require it and providing a more solid back, While the leaves may be so held that they may be easily turned.

I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a self-binder the combination with the back-edge-clamping strips having backboards flexibly connected therewith, the middle slide-plate, the sleeve adjustably secured thereto, the telescopic guide-rods upon each side thereof and the separate leaves each having a back notch or recess, and slots formed in the sides of said leaves to embrace the guide-rods, substantially as described.
