Description
The present invention relates to a method for purifying carbon nanotubes, and more particularly, to a method for purifying carbon nanotubes by a heat treatment method in a gas phase.
Carbon nanotubes are extremely small cylindrical materials whose diameters are very small, usually about several nm, and have an aspect ratio of about 10 to 1000. In carbon nanotubes, one carbon atom is bonded to three other carbon atoms and forms a hexagonal honeycomb pattern. Carbon nanotubes are materials that can exhibit metallic conductivity or semiconductor conductivity according to their structure, and are expected to be widely applied to various technical fields.
Recently, several methods for mass synthesis of carbon nanotubes have been proposed. However, in the carbon nanotube synthesis methods developed so far, with the growth of carbon nanotubes, other carbonaceous materials are always produced as by-products. In addition, according to various processing conditions such as the catalyst used in synthesizing the carbon nanotubes, the film quality, etc., the crude product of the carbon nanotubes includes transition metal particles, transition metal derivatives, amorphous carbon, fullerenes, It contains a large amount of various kinds of impurities such as carbon nanoparticles and graphite.
In particular, in the electric discharge method for synthesizing multi-shelled carbon nanotubes, carbon nanoparticles mainly contain by-products. In addition, when carbon nanotubes are synthesized using plasma chemical vapor deposition or thermal chemical vapor deposition, the amount of carbon nanoparticles produced is smaller than that of the electric discharge method. By-products such as amorphous carbon are produced a lot, and transition metal particles are often present in the tip portion of carbon nanotubes.
Therefore, in order to apply carbon nanotubes to devices such as FED (Field Emission Displays), VFD (Vacuum Fluorescent Displays) or white light sources, it is necessary to purify the unwanted substances.
Conventionally, various purification techniques such as filtering, chromatography, ultrasonic cleaning, centrifugation, etc. have been used to remove these impurities from the crude product of carbon nanotubes. However, these methods are not only time-consuming and complicated, but also remove some of the relatively large agglomerates from carbon nanotubes, but effectively separate fine carbon nanoparticles and transition metal particles from the surface and sides of the carbon nanotubes. It does not, and the purification yield is very low.
As another conventional technique, Japanese Patent Application No. Hei 5-133048 has purged carbon nanotubes by an oxidation reaction in an oxidizing gas atmosphere such as oxygen and water vapor. This method takes advantage of the difference in chemical reactivity at the molecular level of the 5 pentagons and the 6 hexagons contained in the graphite constituting the outer wall of the carbon nanotubes. This purification method is very difficult to control the optimum reaction time and temperature, and as time passes, carbon nanotubes are also oxidized with a problem that the yield is very low.
As another conventional technique, Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 8-12310 discloses a reaction reagent selected from an oxidizing agent, a nitrating agent, and a sulfonating agent in a liquid phase, and a crude carbon nanotube containing carbon impurities, and reacting the chemical in a liquid phase. A method for purifying carbon nanotubes is disclosed. This method can be processed at low temperature, but the time required for chemical reaction in the liquid phase is very long, which requires a very long treatment time, and after the chemical reaction in the liquid phase, it has to go through filtering, washing step and drying step. Therefore, since the neutralization step and the washing step using the basic solution are further required, there is a problem that the treatment process is complicated and the purification time is long.
