Abstract

PURPOSE: To cast a gray cast iron having a uniform A-type flaky grapohite structure by a method wherein a gray cast iron material is melted by heating it with a specified temperature rise rate in the temperature range exceeding A1 transformation point thereof, and after adding pig iron or malleable cast iron and an inoculant, the molten metal is poured into a sand mold.
CONSTITUTION: A gray cast iron material of a chemical composition containing C. Si, Mn, P and S in the ranges for ordinary gray cast irons is melted by heating it with a temperature rise rate of less than 10°C/min. in the temperature range exceeding the A1 transformation point thereof. Into the molten metal, a pig iron containing crystallized graphite or a malleable cast iron containing precipitated graphite is added and melted. After adding the inoculant and melting it, the molten metal is cast by pouring it into the sand mold. According to this method, even in the case of casting an article which varies in wall thickness and has a thin-walled part, eutectic graphite is not generated at all and a gray cast iron of a uniform structure of A-type flakly graphite can be obtained.
