Abstract

PURPOSE: To cast a gray cast iron having a uniform A-type flaky graphite structure by a method wherein a gray cast iron material is melted by heating it with a specified rate of temperature rise in the temperature range exceeding the A1 transformation point thereof, and after adding an inoculant, the molten metal is poured into a sand mold.
CONSTITUTION: A gray cast iron material of a chemical composition containing C, Si Mn, P and S in the ranges for ordinary gray cast irons is melted with a temperature rise of 10W<60C/min. in the temperature range exceeding the A1 transformation point thereof. After adding the inoculant to the molten metal and melting the inoculant, the molten metal is cast by pouring it into the sand mold. According to this method, even in the case of casting an article which varies in wall thickness and has a thin-walled part, eutectic graphite is not generated at all and a gray cast iron having a uniform and homogeneous structure of A-type flaky graphite can be obtained.
