Abstract

PURPOSE:To heighten the wear resistance of a pad fitted in the recess of the top of a tappet provided on the upper end of a valve spindle and reduce the weight of the pad, by making the pad of a composite material produced by dispersing hard grains in a matrix of aluminum alloy. CONSTITUTION:A tappet 4 is provided on the upper end of the spindle 2 of a valve 1 and fitted with a spring 3. A pad 7 is provided in the recess 5 of the top of the tappet 4 to adjust the clearance between the tappet and a cam 6. The pad 7 is made of a composite material 13 produced by dispersing hard grains 10 such as Al2O3 powder in a matrix of aluminum alloy 12. The hard grains 10 are put in a die 9 and press-shaped by a punch 11. The molten aluminum alloy 12 is put on the press-shaped grains 10 and pressed by the punch 11, thereby molding the composite material 13. The molded material 13 is machined to manufacture the pad 8. According to this constitution, the wear resistance of the pad 8 is enhanced and its weight is reduced.
