661,341. Making cased cylinders; casting composite articles. SOC. NATIONALE D'ETUDE ET DE CONSTRUCTION DE MOTEURS D'AVIATION. Aug. 5, 1949 [Feb. 8, 1949], No. 20437/49. Classes 83 (i) and 83 (ii). [Also in Group XXVII] A ferrous-metal cylinder, e.g. for an aircraft engine, is provided with cooling fins, after the usual thermal treatment and at least partial external machining, by electro-plating a portion of the machined surface with tin and casting metal therearound which is designed to be shaped into fins. The electrodeposit may be of tin and one to a few hundredths of a millimetre thick. The cylinder may be of steel, about 5 millimetres thick after complete machining, and may be sand-blasted externally. After plating, the cylinder 1 may be heated to 120‹ C. and placed in a sand mould 2, 3, 4, 4a and aluminium or its alloy 5 be poured in. After cooling, the risers &c. are cut off and the mass 5 machined to form the fins. A metal mould and pressure casting are used in a modification.
