Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain an Al alloy with superior machinability and wear resistance by adding Cu, Mn and Mg to Al in a specified ratio.
CONSTITUTION: This Al alloy consists of, by wt., 8W15% Cu, 0.2W1.0% Mn, 0.2W1.0% Mg and the balance Al with ordinary impurities. Less than the lower limit of Cu results in inferior machinability, especially inferior suitability to treatment of shavings (a property of discharging short-cut shavings) and inferior wear resistance. More than the upper limit of Cu causes cracks during hot forging. Mn is effective in making the alloy grains fine and improving the corrosion resistance, yet less than the lower limit of Mn reduces the effect, and more than the upper limit of Mn wears a tool during cutting. Mg enhances the mechanical strength, yet the content is restricted because excess Mg deteriorates the castability.
