Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a liquid crystal display element which can make color display with decreased unequal colors by constituting said element of a 1st liquid crystal layer, a 2nd liquid crystal layer which is partitioned by a light transparent substrate and is sandwiched by substrates and a pair of polarizers. CONSTITUTION:The 1st liquid crystal layer 16 is formed between the 1st substrate 11 which is formed with a transparent electrode 13 and is subjected to an orientation treatment and the 2nd substrate 21. The 2nd liquid crystal layer 26 is formed between the substrate 21 and the 3rd substrate 31 on the side of the 1st substrate opposite to the 1st liquid crystal layer. The 1st liquid crystal layer is subjected to the orientation treatment in such a manner that the liquid crystal is oriented approximately horizontally with the substrate. The liquid crystal molecules are preferentially oriented along this orientation treatment direction. The background color of the cell can, therefore, the made into white or black and the good contrast can be imparted to the cell from the voltage-transmittance characteristic thereof. The unequal colors are thereby hardly generated and the black and white display of the large display capacity is enabled; in addition the light leakage by wavelengths is decreased and, therefore, the cell is usable as an optical shutter for the color display.
