Abstract

PURPOSE:To arrange uniformly the liquid crystal and pigment molecules in the fixed direction with a small angle of inclination by rubbing in the fixed direction the display surface of an electrode substrate and by treating the surface with a silane surfactant. CONSTITUTION:A glass substrate 1 equipped with a transparent electrode coated film 2 is cleaned, after drying, the surface is rubbed in the fixed direction. The surface of an electrode substrate 1 rubbed is then treated with a silane surfactant solution which is dissolved with an organic solvent to form a silane surfactant coated film 3. A pair of the electrode substrates 1, 1' which are subjected to this orientation treatment are placed so as to be parallel in orientation and reverse in direction each other and a mixture solution of a nematic liquid crystal 4 having a negative dielectric anisotropy and a dichromatic pigment 5 is enclosed. With this orientation treatment, a uniform and clear positive type display with large contrast is obtained.
