Abstract

PURPOSE:To enhance the low voltage driving properties and display characteristics of a liq. crystal display element by interposing a nematic liq. crystal with positive dielectric anisotropy contg. a dichromatic substance having a light absorption axis perpendicular to the molecular major axis between electrode substrates and making the polarizing axes of polarizing plates parallel with the arranging directions of the liq. crystal contacting with the substrates by means of the substrates. CONSTITUTION:The twisted nematic (TN) liq. crystal display element is provided with a liq. crystal layer consisting of nematic liq. crystal 2 with positive dielectric anisotropy and dichromatic substance 5 having a light absorption axis almost perpendicular to the molecular major axis and two polarizing plates 4', 4'. Crystal 2 and substance 5 contacting with transparent electrode substrates 1', 1 are parallelly arranged, and the directions on the substrate 1' and 1 surfaces are made perpendicular to each other. The polarizing axes of substrate 1' side polarizing plate 4' and substrate 1 side polarizing plate 4' are parallel with crystal 2 contacting with the insides of substrates 1', 1, respectively. Thus, a display of a high contrast and a large field angle of view is obtd. at a voltage slightly above the threshold voltage.
