Abstract

PURPOSE: To make reactions homogeneous and reduce alumina ore to aluminum efficiently by a method wherein briquets of a kneaded mixture of ore and coal powders are coked in an nonoxidizing atmosphere and the coked briquets are used as a raw material.
CONSTITUTION: Ore powder having a molar ratio of alumina to silica of about 1:1 is mixed with coal powder, the mixture is kneaded by a kneading machine 1 and the kneaded mixture is fed to a briquetting machine 3 to produce the briquest. The briquets are stored in a carbonizing chamber 7 of a carbonizing furnace 6, through which a nonoxidizing gas is passed so as to products porous alumina-based coked briquets. The coked briquets are charged into a blast furnace 10 and are heated to a temperature of not lower than 2,000°C, whereby the alumina and silica contained in the raw material are completely reduced to form an Al-Si alloy. In this case, molten lead is injected through a tuyere so that the dropping alloy is absorbed into the molten lead. Then, after deleading, aluminum and silicon are separated from each other.
