Abstract

PURPOSE:To make an adequate cleaning ability ensurable even for in a range of high hoad, regardless of the progress of catalyzer use, by means of providing an actuator for changing an exhaust gas contacting surface area at the exhaust gas induction side of monolith catalyzer. CONSTITUTION:When the engine is highly loaded, with a throttle valve 23 kept at more than a prescribed opening degree, an air intake tube negative pressure comes to be near the atmospheric pressure, and a diaphragm 12 of a negative pressure actuator 11 is pushed toward an atmospheric chamber 13 by a spring 19. This causes a screen plate 15 to move upward, with a screened area in an inflow face 17 becoming perfectly zero, and an exhaust gas of monolith catalyzer from an inflow port 2 passes through even in an upper part path 5, that inhibits a passing at the time of low load, when an oxidation is expedited. That is, at the time of high load, with a cleaning made by a catalyzer 4 in the part with a deterioration not in progress, an adequate cleaning ability can be maintained even after a long time use.
