Claims (1)
- 【特許請求の範囲】 1.液晶とポリマーとの液晶光変調物質を含む光変調セルであって、液晶は、正 の誘電異方性を有し、焦点円錐とねじれ平面テキスチャーを形成するに有効な量 でキラル物質を含むキラルネマチック液晶であり、ポリマーは、電場の存在なし に焦点円錐とねじれ平面テキスチャーを安定化させる量でセル中の相分離したド メインの中に分布し、電場を印加すると液晶のテキスチャーを変化させることが 可能な光変調セル。 2.キラルネマチック液晶が、可視スペクトルの外側の光を反射するピッチ長さ を有する請求の範囲第1項に記載のセル。 3.キラルネマチック液晶が、赤外スペクトルの光を反射するピッチ長さを有す る請求の範囲第1項に記載のセル。 4.キラルネマチック液晶のピッチ長さが約1.0〜約4.0ミクロンの範囲で ある請求の範囲第1項に記載のセル。 5.キラルネマチック液晶のピッチ長さが約0.5〜約1.0ミクロンの範囲で ある請求の範囲第1項に記載のセル。 6.キラルネマチック液晶が、ネマチック液晶とキラル物質の合計重量を基準に 約1〜約16重量%のキラル物質を含む請求の範囲第1〜4項のいずれか1項に 記載のセル。 7.キラルネマチック液晶が、可視スペクトルの光を反射するピッチ長さを有す る請求の範囲第1項に記載のセル。 8.キラルネマチック液晶のピッチ長さが約0.25〜約0.44ミクロンの範 囲である請求の範囲第7項に記載のセル。 9.キラルネマチック液晶が、ネマチック液晶とキラル物質の合計重量を基準に 約27〜約66重量%のキラル物質を含む請求の範囲第7に記載のセル。 10.液晶分子を配向させるための処理を施したセル壁構造を含む請求の範囲第 1、2、又は7項に記載のセル。 11.ポリマーが、セル中の液晶とポリマーの合計重量を基準に約1.5〜約4 0%の量で存在する請求の範囲第1項に記載のセル。 12.ポリマー安定化液晶は、電場オンの条件でホメオトロピック配向であり、 周りの領域の液晶は、電場オフの条件で光を散乱する焦点円錐テキスチャーであ り、電場オンの条件で光学的に透明なホメオトロピック配向である請求の範囲第 1、2、又は3項に記載のセル。 13.ポリマー安定化液晶は、電場オンの条件でねじれ平面テキスチャーであり 、周りの領域の液晶は、電場オフの条件で光学的に透明なねじれ平面テキスチャ ーであり、電場オンの条件で光を散乱する焦点円錐テキスチャーである請求の範 囲第1、2、又は3項に記載のセル。 14.ポリマー安定化液晶は、高い電場オンの条件を解除した後の電場オフの条 件で光を反射する安定なねじれ平面構造を示し、低い電場オンの条件を解除した 後の電場オフの条件で光を散乱する安定な焦点円錐テキスチャーを示す請求の範 囲第1又は7項に記載のセル。 15.最大の参照強度を反射する安定な色反射状態と、最小の反射の参照強度を 示す安定な色散乱状態の間を、電圧パルスの印加によって切り換えることができ るポリマー安定化キラルネマチック液晶物質を含む光変調セルのアドレス方法で あって、前記重大と最小の参照強度の間の強度の色反射能を有する安定な状態の 連続体を達成するに充分な変化する大きさの電圧パルスを印加する過程を含む方 法。 16.方形の交流電圧パルスを印加することを含む請求の範囲第15項に記載の 方法。 17.前記物質を前記反射状態から前記散乱状態に切り換えることができる大き さより低い大きさでパルスを印加することを含む請求の範囲第15項に記載の方 法。 18.キラルネマチック液晶とポリマーの光変調物資からの着色光の反射強度を 最大と最小の強度の間で選択的に調節する方法であって、前記キラルネマチック 物質の第1の部分に第1の光学的状態を表わさせ、前記キラルネマチック物質の 第2の部分に第2の光学的状態を表させるに充分な時間と電圧の電場パルスに前 記物質を供し、それによって前記物質が、前記第1の光学的状態の前記物質の量 に比例した前記最大と最小の間の選択した強度で連続的に反射することを可能に する方法。 19.前記第1の光学的状態の前記キラルネマチック液晶が平面テキスチャーを 呈し、前記第2の光学的状態が焦点円錐テキスチャーを呈する請求の範囲第18 項に記載の方法。 20.光変調デバイスであって、正の誘電異方性を有するキラルネマチック液晶 とポリマーの相分離ドメインの液晶光変調物質を含み、前記物質の第1の部分は 第1の光学的状態にあり、前記物質の第2の部分は第2の光学的状態にあり、前 記デバイスはさらに、前記物質を貫く電場を確立するための手段を含み、前記手 段は、前記第1の光学的状態の前記物質の割合を変化させるに充分な電圧と時間 のパルスを提供するように作成され、それによって反射する光の強度を選択的に 調節することができるデバイス。 21.前記第1の光学的状態の物質は平面テキスチャーを呈し、前記第2の光学 的状態の物質は焦点円錐テキスチャー呈する請求の範囲第20項に記載のデバイ ス。 22,液晶を配向させるために処理したセル壁構造を含む請求の範囲第20項に 記載のデバイス。 23.前記物質を貫く電場を碑立するための手段は、交流パルスを提供するによ うに作成された請求の範囲第20項に記載のデバイス。
