Description
に係り、特に、一つの光ポートの出力を、選択的に一対
の他の光ポートのいずれかへスイッチングする光ビーム
・スイッチング装置及びそれを用いた通信システムに関
する。ここで各ポートは、通常、光ファイバ(光導波
管)の出口端又は入口端のいずれかである。
テムにおいては、入力光ポートに到達した電磁放射ビー
ムを、選択的に一対の出力ポートのいずれかの一つへス
イッチングすることが望まれている。それは、例えば、
入力光ファイバの出力端に到達した光信号ビームを、何
時でも、スイッチング制御信号に基づいて、一対の出口
光ファイバのいずれか一つへ選択的にスイッチすること
である。更に詳しく述べれば、遠距離通信スイッチング
・システムにおいて光通信経路を変更したい場合が往々
にしてある。即ち、所定の入力ファイバ(I)から第1
出力光ファイバ(A)へ送られる第1経路である光経路
(I A)を、入力ファイバ(I)から第2出力光ファイ
バ(B)へ送る第2経路(I B)へスイッチし、又、第
2経路から第1経路へ戻すスイッチングが望まれてい
る。
N)は、通常、主コンピュータ・ステーション(M)
と、ループ状に配置された光ファイバで構成される光フ
ァイバLANループ(リング)、及びファイバの接合点に
配置された局所ステーション(X、Y、Z…)を有して
いる。各局所ステーションは、通常、個々の局所パーソ
ナル・コンピュータ、又はそれに類するものを有してい
る。光スイッチング装置は、故障した局所ステーション
をバイパスしたり、又はループ自身に故障が発生した場
合に全局所ステーションをバイパスするために必要とさ
れている。
(1979)に発表されたM.Nunoshita et alが述べられて
いる光スイッチング装置が代表的なものである。その論
文では、上記目的のための光スイッチは、光経路をスイ
ッチするための可動レンズを用いている。しかし、その
ようなスイッチは、主に比較的重い部品を相当高速で動
かす必要があるため、ぎこちなく、かつ高価なものとな
っている。又、このようなスイッチに必要な従来の機械
加工の部品は、光ファイバと接続して用いるためには、
光学的調整上、十分な精度を欠いており、そのため各ス
イッチを作る時には、望ましくない、高価で、時間のか
かる調整作業を必要としている。更に、機械的、熱的特
性にバラツキのある部品に起こる劣化現象のために、長
期間の安定性や信頼性に問題を含んでいる。又、これら
のスイッチは、一時的にアクセスのない(オフ・ライ
ン)LANの局部ステーションで、局部光源と接続して、
必要な自己テスト操作をすることができず、仮にできた
としても余分な複雑性が追加される。例えば、Siecor C
orp.,Reserch Triangle Park,NC 27709発行のElectro−
Optics,Application Note 102,Figure 4に述べられてい
るように、複雑な余分なファイバを追加しなければなら
ない。更に、このSiecorの刊行物に述べられているスイ
ッチは、機械的に停止することが必要なため、使用中に
磨耗が生じ易く、それが光部品にスイッチング直後のそ
の方向の望ましくないビームのジッタのような振動を与
える原因となる。
号スイッチング装置、更に一般的には電磁信号スイッチ
ング装置を提供することを目的としている。
ング装置は、 (a)平らな偏向面を有する放射偏向要素(例えば、第
2図のM、第11図のRS)と、 (b)平らな偏向面が、第1領域から第2領域へ、及び
第2領域から第1領域へ、それ自身と平行に動くことが
できるように、偏向要素を回転運動で動かすための駆動
手段(例:第4図のG)と、 (c)偏向要素が第1領域にある時、第1ポート(P1)
のスイッチング部に到着した放射信号ビームが、第2位
置の箇所を通過して伝搬して、第2ポート(P2)に入
り、さらに偏向要素が駆動手段によって動かされて第2
領域にある時、第1ポート(P1)に到着した信号ビーム
が、偏向要素の平らな表面により第3ポート(P3)へ偏
向されるように、夫々が配置されている第1、第2、及
び第3放射ポート(例えば、第1図のP1、P2、P3)と、 (d)平らな主表面(例えば、第3図のPS)と、その主
表面に、第1、第2、第3ポートの夫々の位置を決める
第1、第2、第3導波管を配置する溝(例えば、第3図
のFR1、FR2、FR3)と、その主表面に、第1、第2、第
3ポートの位置と関係して偏向要素を位置決めする一対
の偏向要素位置決めボールベアリング用溝(例えば、第
3図のSBR1、SBR2)を有する基板(例えば、第3図の
S)と、 を備えたことを特徴としている。

素は鏡であり、各ポートは光ファイバの各端部である。
鏡は一対の溝を持つホルダ(ヘッダ)に保持されてい
る。この一対の溝は、鏡を位置決めするため、シリコン
基板にリトグラフされた他の一対の溝と同位置にある。
一対のボールベアリングの各々は、同位置の溝の対の夫
々に嵌められている。ファイバは、光ファイバ配列用の
細長い溝の夫々に光ファイバを収納することにより、相
互に、鏡に対し正しい関係位置を保つ。これらのすべて
の溝は、ボールベアリングを嵌める溝と同時に、シリコ
ン基板にリトグラフされる。この様にして、“シリコン
・ワークベンチ”技術の望ましい精密配列が達成され
る。又、鏡の平らな反斜面は、ボールベアリングにより
それ自身と平行に動くように拘束されるので、スイッチ
ング動作中の鏡の停止持、たとえそれが急停止であって
も、光ビームのジッタは防止されるので効果的である。

上述の装置に対しては、基板中のもう一つの細長い溝に
入れられた第4の光ファイバを形成することにより、第
4ポートが追加される。同時に、局所光源を局所ステー
ションに設けると共に、局所光源からの第2光信号ビー
ムをこの第4ファイバ部分へ送る位置に配置し、さらに
光検出器を局所ステーションに設けて、それを第3ファ
イバ部分に入ってそこから伝搬した後の光ビームを受け
る位置に配置する。この方法では、第1ポートに到着し
た光ビームはLANループからせきとめられ、第4ポート
に到着した第2光ビームは局所光源からせきとめられ、
さらに局所ステーションの偏向要素が第1領域(オフ・
ライン)にある時、第3と第4ファイバ部分をオフセッ
トすることにより、望ましい僅かな有効光強度で、局所
ステーションにおける自己テスト操作を可能とする特徴
を備えた光スイッチング装置を上述のようにLANの中で
用いることができる。
出力)光スイッチング装置10(第1図)又は20(第2
図)は、鏡Mを有し、この鏡Mは光経路外(第1図)又
は光経路内(第2図)のいずれかに位置している。双方
の場合(第1図及び第2図)において、スイッチング装
置10、20は、第1、第2、第3の光ポートP1、P2、P3を
有し、これらの第1、第2、第3の光ポートP1、P2、P3
は、第1、第2、第3の光ファイバ部分F1、F2、F3の夫
々の隣接した端部で構成されている。スイッチング装置
10、20は更に、第1、第2、第3のレンズL1、L2、L3を
有し、これらのレンズL1、L2、L3は、第1ファイバF1か
ら放出する夫々の光線を平行にして、第2ファイバF2
(第1図)に入れ、又は第3ファイバF3(第2図)に入
れる。光線の光放射は光源Lにより供給され、利用手段
U1(第1図)又はU2(第2図)に集められる。鏡M(第
2図)は前部反射面MSI及びそれと平行な後部反射面MS2
を有する。

同一のボールベアリングB1、B2を受け入れて、その場所
に保持する第1、第2ボール用溝SBR1、SBR2である。鏡
Mは、シリコン・ヘッダー(ホルダー)Hに集積されて
いる。このヘッダーは、1対の鏡ボールベアリング用溝
MBR1、MBR2を持ち、それらは、ボールベアリングB1、B2
を受入れて保持する1対の同じ基板ボールベアリング用
溝SBR1、SBR2と同じ位置にある。鏡面の擦れを防止する
ため、即ち鏡が溝から出し入れされるとき、溝MRの側面
に鏡反射面が触れることを防止するため、鏡用溝は十分
広く作られている。鏡用溝MRとボールベアリング用溝SB
R1、SBR2、MBR1、MBR2は、鏡面MS1、レンズL1、L2、L
3、ファイバ部分F1、F2、F3が望ましい相互配置になる
ように、配置される。

であり、鏡Mは、既知のリトグラフ・マスキングと異方
性エッチングで形成され、同じシリコン体に集積された

構成する単結晶シリコン体の<100>面である。

れており、横方向の動きはない。このようにして、鏡M
(第3図及び第4図)の右端は、ボールベアリングB1、
B2を通る前記軸の左側のヘッダH上の点(又は領域)に
加えられる適当な力G(又は力の分布)に応じて、鏡用
溝MRに円滑に出入りすることができる。この力Gは、所
望のスイッチングに適した時間の関数に従って加えられ
る。この力Gは、第4図に示されるように下方に向かっ
ている時は、反時計方向のトルクを生じさせ、それによ
って鏡M(光線の入射するところにある)の関連部分
は、スイッチング装置10、20の光経路外に動かされる。
Gが上向き(図示せず)のときは、この力Gは時計方向
のトルクを生じさせ、鏡Mを光経路の中に入れる。この
ようにして、スイッチング動作の間、Gの方向はスイッ
チング装置10対20(第1図対第2図)の条件を作るため
の鏡Mの動きを決める。

R2内に固定されている同一のボールベアリングB1、B2に
よって配置が完全に決められているので、鏡Mの上下方
向のジッタリング(ランダム的な)運動は、この光装置
を損傷することはない。この様な方法で、有害な横方向
相対運動は、溝SBR1、SBR2中のボールベアリングB1、B2
の剛性によって拘束されるため、基板と鏡間の相対運動
となる機械的振動は、光伝送に悪影響を及ぼすことはな
い。

光強度は減衰する(点線で示す)。ファイバ部分F3に入
るこの減衰ビームは、自己テスト操作に有用である。フ
ァイバ部分F4から来る(過剰な)光を吸収するため、即
ち、ファイバ部分F3に入らない光を吸収するため、必要
に応じアプソーバAを追加することができる。

第7図に示されるように、鏡Mが、光経路中に動かされ
たときは、ファイバ部分F1から出る光ビームはスイッチ
ング装置70の中に入り、そこで鏡Mの第1面MS1で反射
され、第3ファイバ部分F3に向かう。同時に、ファイバ
部分F4から出る光は、鏡Mの第2表面MS2で反射され、
ファイバ部分F2に入る。もし装置60が正しく配置されて
いれば、鏡Mの厚さ(前面と後面間の距離)をd/√2
(=dcos45゜)と等しく作ることによって、装置70も正
しく配置される。特に、第6図おいて、F1から出るビー
ムのほぼ全てがF2に入り、F4から出るビームの断面の一
部のみがF3に入る。第7図おいては、F1から出るビーム
のほぼ全てがF3に入り、F4から出るビームのほぼ全てが
F2に入る。
ァイバの組み合わせを示す別の実施例である。同図にお
いて、ファバF1,F2,F3,F4は、第6−7図と同等に機能
するが、鏡Mの同一側面(前面)配置されている。鏡M
の他の側面(背面)には、補助のファイバAF1,AF2,AF3
が、補助のレンズAL1,AL2,AL3と共に、ファバF1,F2,F3
と整合して配置される(第9図)。3個のレンズL1,L2,
L3のみが必要である。レンズL1は、2本の直交ビームを
同時に通過させる。補助ファイバAF1は、補助ファイバA
F3に接続ファイバCF1によりその端部間で接続されてい
る。同様に、補助ファイバAF2は、補助ファイバAF4に接
続ファイバCF2によりその端部間で接続されている。か
くして、鏡Mが、光ビームの通路内に配置されると(第
8図)、バイパス(オフライン)モードが得られる。特
に、ファイバF1から出た光は、L1を通り、鏡Mに反射さ
れ、L2を通り、ファイバF2に入る。そして、ファイバF4
から出た光は、L1を通り、鏡Mに反射され、L3を通り、
ファイバF3に入る。鏡Mが、光ビームの通路外に配置さ
れると(第9図)、活性(オンライン)モードが得られ
る。F1から出た光は、L1,AL1,AF1,CF1,AF3,AL2,L3を介
してF3に入る。F4から出た光は、L1,AL4,AF4,CF2,AF2,A
L2,L2を介してF3に入る。

路中に入ったときは、光ビームを異なるレンズへ、例え
ば、レンズL2(第10図)の代わりにL3(第11図)へ、十
分な量を送るように屈折する厚さと屈折率に設計されて
いる。屈折板RSの前面と後面は、共に夫々それ自身と平
行に動くように拘束されている。

図)は第6図及び第7図で示したと同じ4ポート光スイ
ッチング装置に用いることができる。

SBR1とSBR2に嵌合されたボールベアリングの位置によっ
て決められることである。これらのボールベアリングの
位置が、第4図に示した力Gに応答して回転する鏡Mの
回転軸を正確に決定する。シリコン・ワークベンチ技術
は、鏡、ボールベアリング、ファイバ及びレンズ用の全
ての溝を、信頼性あるリトグラフによって同時に形成
し、大量生産ベースで、全てのファイバ、レンズ及び鏡
の精密相対配置を保証する。即ち、全ての溝が、従来の
リトグラフ技術の手段で位置決めされた複数の基板を、
同時に製作することが可能となる。同じく、屈折板RS
(第11図及び第13図)の位置と方向は、例えば第3図及
び第5図で示したような基板S中で溝中に嵌合されたボ
ールベアリング(図示せず)によって決定される。
たが、本発明の範囲内で各種変形例を作ることが可能で
ある。例えば、出てくる光ビームを平行にするために、
ファイバの端部を平面でなく、球面ににすることによ
り、レンズの省略が可能となる。また、一つの鏡Mまた
は屈折板RSで、3ポート(又は4ポート)の単一セット
を結合して、より多くのセットを用いることができる。
即ち、それは、各セットがF1、F2、F3(及びF4)と同じ
働きをする3本(又は4本)のファイバの複数のセット
を含むファイバのアレイを持っている。

Claims (7)
- 【請求項1】(a)平らな偏向面を有する放射偏向要素
(M、RS)と、 (b)平らな偏向面が、第1領域から第2領域へ、及び
第2領域から第1領域へ、それ自身と平行に動くことが
できるように、前記偏向要素を回転運動で動かすための
駆動手段(G)と、 (c)前記偏向要素が第1領域にある時、第1ポート
(P1)のスイッチング部に到着した放射信号ビームが、
第2領域の前記偏向要素の存在しない箇所を通過して伝
搬してポート(P2)に入り、さらに前記偏向要素が駆動
手段によって動かされて第2領域にある時、第1ポート
(P1)に到着した信号ビームが、前記偏向要素の平らな
表面により第3ポート(P3)へ偏向されるように、夫々
が配置されている第1、第2、第3放射ポート(P1、P
2、P3)と、 (d)平らな主表面(PS)と、その主表面に、第1、第
2、及び第3ポートの夫々の位置を決める第1、第2、
第3導波管を配置する溝(FR1、FR2、FR3)と、その主
表面に、第1、第2、及び第3ポートの位置と関係して
前記偏向要素を位置決めしかつ前記偏向要素の上記回転
運動を支持する一対の偏向要素位置決めボールベアリン
グ用の溝(SBR1、SBR2)を有する基板(S)と を備えたことを特徴とする電磁放射スイッチング装置。 - 【請求項2】電磁放射は、放射信号ビームが第1光ビー
ムである光放射であり、第1、第2、及び第3導波管配
置用溝は、細長いファイバ配置用溝であり、第1、第
2、第3ポートは夫々、第1、第2、第3の細長い溝に
入れられた第1、第2、第3光ファイバ部分を有しこれ
らの第1、第2、第3の細長い溝が、第1ファイバ部分
から第2、第3ファイバ部分へ放射される第1光ビーム
の伝搬のため、相互に方向づけられた第1、第2、第3
の軸を夫々有することを特徴とする請求項1記載の装
置。 - 【請求項3】基板中の第4導波管用の細長い溝に入れら
れた第4ファイバ部分を含む第4光ポートを有し、この
細長い第4導波管が、前記偏向要素が第1領域に位置す
る時、局所光源から供給されて第4ポートに到達した第
2光信号ビームが、第2領域を通過して第3ポートに入
り、さらに前記偏向要素が第2領域に動かされた時、第
2光ビームが前記偏向要素で反射されて第2ポートに入
るように配置された軸を有することを特徴とする請求項
2記載の装置。 - 【請求項4】第3ファイバ部分に入りそこから伝搬した
後の光ビームを受けるために配置された光検出器を有
し、前記偏向要素が第1距離だけ離れた前面と後面を有
する鏡であり、第4の溝が第3の溝に対してオフセット
距離を持って配置され、それによって、鏡が第1領域に
位置する時、第4ポートに到達した第2光ビームの断面
の一部のみが第3ファイバ部分に入り、鏡が第2領域に
動かされた時、第4ポートに到達した光ビームの断面の
ほぼ全てが第2ファイバ部分に入ることを特徴とする請
求項3記載の装置。 - 【請求項5】請求項1に記載の装置を有し、更に (a)光放射を利用するための利用手段と、 (b)第2ポートに入る光ビームを集め、それを利用手
段へ伝搬するための光伝送手段と を有することを特徴とする通信システム。 - 【請求項6】前記偏向要素が鏡であることを特徴とする
請求項1、2又は4のいずれかに記載の装置。 - 【請求項7】前記偏向要素が平行板屈折要素であること
を特徴とする請求項1、2又は4いずれかに記載の装
置。
