Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a method for manufacturing an electron emission electrode, and more particularly to a method for manufacturing an electron emission electrode using a carbon nanotube attached on a cathode electrode as an electron emission source, and a light emitting device including the electron emission electrode manufactured by the manufacturing method. .
A field emission light-emitting device is a planar light-emitting device configured by disposing a cathode (cathode) and an anode (anode) oppositely and attaching a substance serving as an electron emission source (emitter) on the cathode. In this field emission light emitting device, when an electric field is applied between the cathode and the anode to emit electrons, the electrons hit the anode and light emission occurs.
This field emission light emitting device emits light from the entire plane of the device, and since the thickness of the device itself is small, the mounting location is not limited. Therefore, since it can be easily mounted on the ceiling or wall surface, it is expected as an illumination light source to replace a fluorescent lamp or a cold cathode lamp. Field emission light-emitting devices are also expected as image display devices for information equipment and AV equipment.
A part of a field emission light emitting device in which an electron emission source is mounted on a cathode is called an electron emission device, and a field emission device using a carbon nanotube (CNT) as an electron emission source is known (for example, a patent).
As a method of manufacturing an electron-emitting device by attaching carbon nanotubes to a cathode, generally, a paste in which carbon nanotubes are mixed with a binder is applied to the cathode by means such as spraying or screen printing.
However, since carbon nanotubes have poor dispersibility in the paste, there is a problem that they become bundles in the paste. Since the bundled carbon nanotubes cannot concentrate the electric field efficiently, the electron emission electrode in which a paste containing the bundled carbon nanotubes is applied to the cathode has low electron emission efficiency.
The inventors of the present application have also proposed a carbon nanotube / carbon nanohorn complex (hereinafter referred to as “composite”) composed of carbon nanotubes and carbon nanohorn particles (Japanese Patent Application No. 2008-169942). In this composite, carbon nanotubes are grown from catalyst particles supported on carbon nanohorns constituting carbon nanohorn particles (Patent Document 3).
In this composite, the catalyst particles are supported on the carbon nanohorns at a predetermined interval, so that the carbon nanotubes grown from the catalyst particles are also arranged at a predetermined interval. Therefore, when this composite is used as an electron emission source of an electron emission electrode, an electron emission element with high electron emission efficiency can be obtained.
However, as with conventional carbon nanotubes, even if this composite is mixed with a binder and pasted into a cathode, the carbon nanotubes in the composite are still bundled, so that the electron emission efficiency is sufficiently high. It was difficult to make it high.
Further, if the paste is subjected to ultrasonic treatment or roll mill treatment to eliminate the bundle structure, the carbon nanotubes are cut and the aspect ratio is reduced, so that the electron emission efficiency is also lowered.
The present invention has been made in view of the above circumstances, and an object thereof is to provide a method of manufacturing an electron-emitting electrode that efficiently emits electrons and a light-emitting device that emits light with high luminance.
The method for producing an electron emission electrode according to the present invention is a method for producing an electron emission electrode using carbon nanotubes as an electron emission source, wherein the catalyst particles are supported on carbon nanohorns on which the catalyst particles on which the carbon nanotubes are grown are supported. A paste preparing step of preparing a paste by mixing the carbon nanohorn supporting the catalyst particles with a solvent, a paste applying step of applying the paste on the cathode electrode, and applying the paste on the cathode electrode A carbon nanotube growth step of growing the carbon nanotubes from the catalyst particles carried on the carbon nanohorns in the paste.
The light-emitting device according to the present invention includes the electron-emitting electrode manufactured by the above method.
According to the production method of the present invention, after a paste containing carbon nanohorn particles composed of carbon nanohorns carrying catalyst particles at predetermined intervals is applied to the cathode electrode, carbon nanotubes are grown from the catalyst particles. Therefore, it is possible to manufacture an electron emission electrode in which carbon nanotubes are not bundled on the cathode electrode. Therefore, the electron emission efficiency of the electron emission electrode manufactured using the method of the present invention is increased. In addition, when the light emitting device is provided with the electron emission electrode manufactured by the above method, the luminance of the light emitting device is increased.
Hereinafter, embodiments of the present invention will be described with reference to the drawings.

FIGS. 3A to 3D are diagrams for explaining the catalyst particle supporting step, and each drawing shows a part of the
First, as shown in FIG. 3 (a), an

The acid treatment is performed by immersing the
When the
For example, when using a sublimation apparatus including a sealed container, a vacuum pump, and a heat source, the catalyst
Alternatively, when the immersion tank is used, the catalyst
The catalyst
The size of the
When the catalyst
When the catalyst
Next, the oxidation reaction is promoted by the action (catalytic action) of the

Nitrocellulose, ethylcellulose, acrylic resin, or the like may be selected as the organic binder, and glass frit, metal complex, conductive fine particles, or the like may be selected as the binder.
(Paste application process)
Next, as shown in the plan view of FIG. 4A, the paste prepared in the paste preparation process is spread on the
Note that the heat treatment may be performed, for example, by baking at 350 ° C. to 500 ° C. for 15 to 30 minutes in an air atmosphere or by baking at 400 ° C. to 600 ° C. for 15 to 30 minutes in a nitrogen atmosphere.
(Carbon nanotube growth process)
Next, as shown in FIG. 5A, the
When the reduction process is completed, the temperature of the
In addition, when the carbon source compound is filled in the
The flow rate of the carbon source compound is measured by a flow meter (not shown) and is prepared according to the diameter of the
As the carbon source compound, gas such as methane, ethane, ethylene, acetylene, methanol or ethanol, or CO gas is used.
Moreover, in this embodiment, although inert gas is used as carrier gas, it is good also considering other gas, for example, the mixed gas which mixed hydrogen gas and inert gas by the predetermined ratio as carrier gas.
When the carbon source compound introduced into the
In addition, since the kind of the
In the present embodiment, the size of the
Moreover, the
Further, the ratio of the
Further, in the present embodiment, an example in which a part of the
Alternatively, the
Moreover, in this embodiment, the example which forms the
FIG. 7 is a cross-sectional view showing a conceptual configuration of the
The
As described above, according to the production method of the present invention, after applying a paste containing carbon nanohorn particles composed of carbon nanohorns carrying catalyst particles at predetermined intervals to the cathode electrode, carbon nanotubes are removed from the catalyst particles. Since the growth is performed, it is possible to manufacture an electron emission electrode in which carbon nanotubes are not bundled on the cathode electrode. This facilitates the concentration of the electric field on the carbon nanotubes, thereby increasing the electron emission efficiency of the electron emission electrode. When the electron emission electrode manufactured by this method is provided in the light emitting device, the luminance of the light emitting device is increased.

Example 1
An electron emission electrode was produced by the production method of the present invention, and the electron emission characteristics of the electrode were evaluated.
(Supporting catalyst particles)
Carbon nanohorn (CNH) was heated to 500 ° C. in dry air at 1 ° C./min, and then allowed to cool naturally to open holes (hereinafter, this product is abbreviated as CNH OX ). At this time, the flow rate of dry air was 200 mL / min. Then, iron acetate (50 mg) and CNH OX (50 mg) were mixed in 20 mL of ethanol solution and stirred at room temperature for about 24 hours. The mixture was filtered twice using a filter and then vacuum-dried for 24 hours to completely distill off the solvent (hereinafter, this product is abbreviated as Fe-CNH OX ). When CNH OX is observed with a transmission electron microscope (hereinafter abbreviated as TEM), a hole having a size of about 1 nm is formed in a defect portion (a portion where a five-membered ring or a seven-membered ring exists) at the tip or side surface. It was confirmed that it was formed. In addition, when observing Fe-CNH OX with TEM, iron oxide particles having a size of about 1 nm to 3 nm are supported in a state in which a part is exposed to the outside from a hole formed in a defect portion on the tip or side surface. I confirmed.
(Preparation of paste)
Fe-CNH OX (200 mg) obtained by the above method was sonicated and dispersed in α-terpioneer (15 mL) for 30 minutes to prepare a dispersion, and then 200 mg of cellulose-based organic was added to the dispersion. A binder was mixed with 400 mg of glass frit and sonicated for 30 minutes to prepare a paste.
(Paste application)
Then, the paste was screen-printed on a glass substrate (cathode electrode) sputtered with ITO so as to have a thickness of about 100 μm, and then heat-treated at 500 ° C. in a nitrogen atmosphere to remove the organic binder. A layer of -CNH OX was formed on the cathode electrode.
(Growth of carbon nanotubes)
The cathode electrode on which the Fe—CNH OX layer was formed was placed in the reaction tube of the CVD apparatus, and the temperature was raised to 400 ° C. in a mixed gas stream of argon and hydrogen (Ar: 500 mL / min, hydrogen: 50 mL / min). The Fe—CNH OX layer was reduced for 30 minutes and then heated to 600 ° C. in an argon stream. Then, argon gas was bubbled into ethanol, ethanol gas was introduced into the reaction tube, and CNT was grown for 20 minutes to produce an electron emission electrode. When the surface of the electrode was observed with a TEM or a scanning electron microscope (hereinafter abbreviated as SEM), single-layer and double-layer CNTs were confirmed, and many single-layer CNTs were particularly confirmed. In addition, the CNTs forming the bundle structure were few, and they were dispersed and grown on CNH. In addition, many CNTs having a diameter of 0.7 nm to 2.5 nm (single layer) or 1 nm to 3 nm (two layers) and a length of about 10 μm to 100 μm and a high aspect ratio were observed.
(Production of light emitting device)
A light emitting device was manufactured using the electron emission electrode manufactured by the above method. Here, the anode electrode was produced by forming an ITO film on the upper surface of a transparent glass substrate by sputtering and applying a phosphor layer on the upper surface of the ITO film by screen printing. The size of the electrodes was 2 cm × 2 cm, and the distance between the electrodes was set to 3 mm. Further, after the vacuum degree inside the light emitting device was reduced to 4 × 10 −6 Pa, the gap between the anode electrode and the electron emission electrode was sealed with a glass frit. In addition, in order to compare with the electron emission characteristics of the electron emission element electrode according to this example, an electron emission electrode (hereinafter abbreviated as a conventional single layer CNT electrode) prepared by applying a single layer CNT paste was used. Thus, a fluorescent lamp was produced in the same manner as described above.
(Evaluation of electron emission characteristics)
The light emitting device manufactured by the above method was turned on and the respective luminances were measured. As a result, the light emitting device according to this example had a luminance at the same voltage as compared with the conventional light emitting device including the single-layer CNT electrode. It was confirmed that the electron emission efficiency of the electron emission electrode was improved by a factor of two. In order to investigate this difference in characteristics, the surface of each electrode was observed with an SEM. As a result, the conventional single-wall CNT electrode had a larger bundle structure than the electron emission electrode of this example.
