Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to an electrochemical device comprising an insulating substrate, at least a pair of electrodes disposed on the insulating substrate, and an electrolyte solution impregnated in the pair of electrodes.
Conventionally, electrochemical elements such as chemical batteries and electric double layer capacitors having a high volumetric energy density have been used for backup power supplies, auxiliary power supplies, etc. for mobile phones and household electric products, and miniaturization thereof is expected.
However, in
In view of the above problems, an object of the present invention is to provide an electrochemical element having a high volumetric energy density while maintaining a large capacitance while suppressing internal resistance.
In order to achieve the above object, the present inventors have focused on using an aggregate of fibrous carbon such as carbon nanotubes as an electrode, and have completed the present invention.
A feature of the present invention is an electrochemical device comprising an insulating substrate, at least a pair of electrodes disposed on the insulating substrate, and an electrolyte impregnated in the pair of electrodes, the pair of electrodes on the insulating substrate The gist of the present invention is that it is an electrochemical element formed from an aggregate of fibrous carbon grown from the above.
By using fibrous carbon as an electrode, it is easy to increase the thickness of the electrode. Furthermore, since the internal resistance of the fibrous carbon in the axial direction is small, the internal resistance is hardly increased even if the electrode thickness is increased. Does not increase. Further, like an activated carbon electrode formed by screen printing, there is little sagging at the end of the electrode, and it can be formed in a substantially rectangular shape. As a result, the distance between the electrodes can be made smaller than that of the activated carbon electrode, and the space between the electrodes, which was a loss of capacitance, can be reduced.
Therefore, according to the electrochemical element according to the feature of the present invention, it is possible to maintain a large capacitance and a high volume energy density while suppressing internal resistance.
In the electrochemical device according to the feature of the present invention, the ratio of the distance between the pair of electrodes to the thickness of the pair of electrodes is preferably 0.5 or more.
By comprising in this way, the short circuit between electrodes can be prevented and the yield at the time of manufacture can also be improved.
In the electrochemical device according to the feature of the present invention, the electrolytic solution preferably contains a gel electrolyte.
According to the present invention, it is possible to provide an electrochemical element having a high energy density while maintaining a large capacitance while suppressing internal resistance.

In the following description of the drawings, the same or similar parts are denoted by the same or similar reference numerals. However, it should be noted that the drawings are schematic and ratios of dimensions and the like are different from actual ones. Accordingly, specific dimensions and the like should be determined in consideration of the following description. Moreover, it is a matter of course that portions having different dimensional relationships and ratios are included between the drawings.
(Electrochemical element)
In the embodiment of the present invention, an electric double layer capacitor including a concave frame and a sealing plate will be described as an example of an electrochemical element.
又、図1(b)は、図1(a)を分極性電極2a側から見た側面図、図1(c)は、図1(a)のA−A断面図である。
As shown in FIG. 1A, the electric double layer capacitor is impregnated with an
The
Further, as shown in FIG. 6, the ratio of the polarizable electrode interval L3 to the polarizable electrode thickness L1, that is, the electrode interval L3 / electrode thickness L1, is preferably 0.5 or more and 3.0 or less. If it is less than 0.5, the yield decreases, and if it is more than 3.0, it causes a decrease in capacitance or an increase in internal resistance.
Moreover, it is preferable that the diameter of fibrous carbon is 1-30 nm. If it exceeds 30 nm, the specific surface area becomes small, and the capacitance decreases.
The number density of fibrous carbon is preferably 1 × 10 10 to 1 × 10 14 cm −2 . When the number density is less than 1 × 10 10 , the fibers tend to fall sideways, causing a short circuit.
The crystalline structure of the fibrous carbon is more preferably a cylindrical graphite structure (so-called carbon nanotube (hereinafter referred to as CNT)) in which the graphite surface is parallel to the tube axis direction. In addition, there are carbon nanofibers in which the graphite surface is not parallel to the tube axis direction. However, CNT is superior in terms of electrical conductivity, and has an advantage that the internal resistance is reduced.
In many cases, an electric double layer capacitor as shown in FIG. 1 is used by using a polarizable electrode for both the positive electrode and the negative electrode. However, only one of the positive electrode and the negative electrode is used as the polarizable electrode, and the other one is filled. It is good also as a non-polarizable electrode which mainly uses the non-polarizable electrode material which can be discharged, ie, the active material material for secondary batteries.
The
Moreover, the container which accommodates the

Made of heat resistant material.
Sealing plate is made of nickel, copper, brass, zinc, tin, gold, platinum, stainless steel (SUS444, SUS239J4L, SUS317J4L, etc.), metal material such as tungsten, aluminum, or heat resistant resin, glass, ceramics, ceramic glass, etc. Consists of materials.
The electrolytic solution is an organic electrolytic solution. Here, the solvent used in the electrolytic solution may be any solvent that can dissolve the electrolyte, and generally a known solvent used in the electrolytic solution of an electric double layer capacitor or a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery should be used. Can do. For example, ethylene carbonate, propylene carbonate, butylene carbonate, γ-butyrolactone, γ-valerolactone, sulfolane, ethylene glycol, polyethylene glycol, vinylene carbonate, chloroethylene carbonate, dimethyl carbonate, diethyl carbonate, methyl ethyl carbonate, dipropyl carbonate, dibutyl Use carbonate, dimethoxymethane, dimethoxyethane, methoxyethoxyethane, diethoxyethane, tetrahydrofuran, 2-methyl-tetrahydrofuran, dimethylformamide, dimethyl sulfoxide, acetonitrile, methyl formate, dioxolane, 4-methyl-1,3-dioxolane, etc. be able to.
Further, the electrolyte in the above electrolytic solution is preferably a gel electrolyte. The gel electrolyte is obtained by incorporating an electrolyte salt into a polar polymer medium and adding an appropriate plasticizer to form a gel, and the electrolyte salt is dissolved and ion-dissociated in the gel medium. By making the electrolyte into a gel, the contact of fibrous carbon between the positive electrode and the negative electrode can be prevented. As the electrolyte salt, for example, an alkali metal salt such as sodium salt or potassium salt, an ammonium salt, or the like can be used.
Here, as the above ammonium salt, for example, NH 4 ClO 4, NH 4
Other electrolyte salts include, for example, (C 2 H 5 ) 4 NClO 4 , (C 2 H 5 ) 4 NBF 4 , (C 2 H 5 ) 4 NPF 6 , (C 2 H 5 ) 4 NCF 3 SO 3 , [(C 2 H 5 ) 4 N] 2 B 10 Cl 10 , [(C 2 H 5 ) 4 N] 2 B 12 Cl 12 , (C 2 H 5 ) 4 N (CF 3 SO 2 ) 2 , ( C 2 H 5) 4 N ( C 2 F 5 SO 2) 2, (C 2 H 5) 4 N (C 4 F 9 SO 2) (
(Function and effect)
In the case of using activated carbon electrodes by screen printing in conventional electrochemical elements, the optimum viscosity range exists in screen printing paste, and sagging occurs at the ends of the electrodes, so there is a limit to reducing the electrode spacing. was there. For example, as shown in FIG. 7, the electrode interval L3 of the activated carbon electrode needs to be set to be equal to or greater than the electrode thickness L1, and in order to increase the yield, an electrode interval of twice or more the electrode thickness L1 is required. there were.
According to the electrochemical element according to the present embodiment, as shown in FIG. 6, by using fibrous carbon as an electrode, there is little sagging at the end of the electrode like an activated carbon electrode formed by screen printing, and it is almost rectangular. Can be formed. As a result, the distance between the electrodes can be made smaller than that of the activated carbon electrode, and the space between the electrodes, which was a loss of capacitance, can be reduced.
Further, it is easy to form a thick electrode, and furthermore, since the internal resistance of the fibrous carbon in the axial direction is small, the internal resistance hardly increases even if the thickness of the electrode is increased.
Therefore, according to the electrochemical device according to the present embodiment, it is possible to keep the capacitance large and to keep the volume energy density high while suppressing the internal resistance.

Then, a drying process was performed at 200 ° C. Here, the electrode width was 0.4 mm, and the electrode interval was 0.2 mm. The number of electrodes was four. The
[Preparation of electrolyte]
Using propylene carbonate (PC) as a solvent, solute tetraethylammonium tetrafluoroborate (TEABF 4 ) was dissolved at a concentration of 1 mol / l to prepare an electrolytic solution.
[Production of electric double layer capacitor cell]
The alumina substrate having the polarizable electrode produced as described above was accommodated in a concave alumina container having a side of 5 mm and a height of 1.5 mm. And after pouring the said electrolyte solution so that an electrode may fully immerse in an alumina container, the peripheral part of a concave alumina container and the sealing plate made from aluminum are sealed by heat welding, and an electric double layer capacitor Got. The
(Comparative Example 2)
In Comparative Example 2, an electric double layer capacitor was obtained in the same manner as in Comparative Example 1 except that the pattern of the current collector layer 14 was changed.
That is, the thickness of the polarizable electrode in Comparative Example 2 was 0.1 mm, the electrode width was 0.2 mm, and the electrode interval was 0.1 mm. The number of electrodes was 8.
Next, electrostatic capacity and internal resistance were measured for each of the electric double layer capacitor cells of Examples 1 to 3 and Comparative Examples 1 and 2 manufactured as described above. Capacitance and internal resistance were expressed as indices, with Comparative Example 1 taken as 100. The results are shown in Table 1.
In Example 1, compared to Comparative Example 1, the internal resistance could be reduced to 35%. Thereby, it turned out that internal resistance can be reduced by using a CNT electrode grown perpendicularly to the substrate instead of the activated carbon electrode.
Further, the internal resistance of Example 2 could be further reduced as compared with Example 1. Thus, it was found that the internal resistance can be further reduced by reducing the electrode width and the electrode interval.
Moreover, compared with the comparative example 1, although the comparative example 2 was able to reduce internal resistance, the electrostatic capacitance reduced large. As shown in FIG. 7, it was found that as a result of reducing the electrode width L <b> 3, sagging of the electrode end and poor printing were caused. Furthermore, an attempt was made to form a thicker activated carbon electrode, but it was difficult to form a thicker film.
In addition, the capacitance of Example 3 was dramatically improved as compared with Example 1 and Example 2. Thus, it was found that the capacitance is improved by increasing the ratio of the electrode thickness to the electrode width (electrode thickness / electrode width). As shown in FIG. 6, the CNT electrode has no sagging at the end of the electrode as in the case of the activated carbon electrode formed by screen printing, and even if the electrode thickness increases, This is because the internal resistance hardly increased because the conductivity was very good.
Next, in the electric double layer capacitor in Example 2, the electrode width (0.2 mm) and the electrode thickness (0.1 mm) are fixed, and the electrode interval is 0.2 to 0.025 mm, that is, the electrode interval / Polarizable electrodes were produced with the electrode thickness ratio varied from 2 to 0.25. Using these, an electric double layer capacitor was obtained in the same procedure as in Example 2. These were designated as Examples 4-1 to 4-5, respectively, and the capacitance and internal resistance were measured. Capacitance and internal resistance were expressed as indices with Comparative Example 1 as 100. The results are shown in Table 2. FIG. 5 shows the relationship between the electrode spacing / electrode thickness ratio of each cell and the yield.
From Table 2, the same results were obtained for both capacitance and internal resistance, but there was a difference in the yield of each cell. As shown in FIG. 5, when the electrode spacing / electrode thickness ratio was 0.5 or less, the yield suddenly decreased. The cause of the decrease in yield was due to a short circuit between the electrodes. For this reason, it turned out that it is preferable that ratio of electrode space | interval / electrode thickness is 0.5 or more. In addition, the ratio of electrode spacing / electrode thickness is preferably 3.0 or less because it causes a decrease in capacitance per unit volume and an increase in internal resistance due to an increase in cell volume.
(Experiment 3)
Next, in the electric double layer capacitor in Example 2, an electric double layer capacitor was produced using a gel electrolyte. Specifically, first, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVdF) and TEABF 4 were dissolved in a heated PC to obtain a uniform precursor solution. The electrode was immersed in this solution, and while heating in a reduced-pressure oven, the PC was volatilized until it gelled to obtain a gel electrolyte. The salt concentration was adjusted to 1 mol / l as in Examples 1-4. As the polymer to be used, polyethylene oxide (PEO), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), polyacrylonitrile (PAN), polyvinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene (PVdF-HFP) and the like can be used in addition to PVdF.
From Table 3, similar results were obtained for both the capacitance and the internal resistance, but a difference appeared in the yield of each cell. As shown in FIG. 5, when the gel electrolyte shown in Example 5 is used rather than the solvent-type electrolyte shown in Example 4, the yield is improved when the electrode spacing is reduced. I understood. This is probably because the use of a gel electrolyte can prevent the contact of CNTs between the positive electrode and the negative electrode, and the yield is improved.
