Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a production method and apparatus for producing carbon nanotubes.
また、FIB(Focused Ion Beam)技術を用いた方法が報告されている。
In view of this point, it is conceivable that the tip of the electron source emitter is a carbon nanotube (hereinafter referred to as CNT). Carbon nanotubes not only have excellent electrical conductivity, but also have a very large aspect ratio (aspect ratio), a sharp tip, and are chemically stable and mechanically strong. It is advantageous to use nanotubes as the tip of an electron source emitter.
Non-patent
However, in the above-described method of concentrating the electric field on the tip of the emitter, a certain amount of selective generation effect is observed due to the concentration of the electric field. There is a problem of end. Also, in the method of generating CNTs by applying catalytic metal to the emitter tip using FIB technology, time and skill are required because the technology for focusing FIB on the emitter tip is sophisticated. Even if the catalyst can be successfully applied to the tip of the emitter, other parts are exposed as in the first technique, so there is no guarantee that CNTs will never be generated in parts other than the catalyst. Furthermore, in both methods, it is extremely difficult to remove CNTs that have grown beyond the desired site.
The problems to be solved by the present invention include the above-mentioned problems in a row, and it is an object of the present invention to provide a CNT generation method and apparatus that generate CNTs more reliably and easily in selected portions. .

FIG. 1A to FIG. 1E show a first embodiment of the present invention, and show an execution procedure of a CNT generation method according to the present invention.

In the step shown in FIG. 1E, finally, the
The first embodiment utilizes the fact that the emitter is once covered with resin, and the thickness of the insulating resin layer is different between the tip and other parts. As a result, the CNT growth region is selected by exposing only the tip of the emitter even by etching. Even if CNT grows in other parts, it is possible to remove unnecessary CNTs simultaneously and easily by removing the insulating resin layer.

In this second embodiment, unlike the first embodiment, instead of directly growing CNTs, the catalyst metal for CNTs is deposited and then the coating layer, that is, the polymer layer is removed, and CNTs are grown by the conventional technique. The CNTs are selectively generated at the tip of the emitter. Thus, since the CNTs are grown at the end of the entire process, it is possible to avoid the CNTs grown as shown in Example 1 from being damaged in a later process.

Examples of the catalyst metal for CNT growth include Fe, Co, and Ni metals. The catalyst applying means 40 may include other devices such as a vapor deposition device capable of applying a catalyst metal instead of the sputtering device 41.
The CNT growth means 50 includes a plasma CVD apparatus 51 that uses chemical vapor deposition. As is clear from the above embodiments, the method and apparatus for producing CNTs according to the present invention have different coating layer thicknesses at the tip of the emitter and other parts when the entire substrate including the emitter is covered with the coating layer. Is to use that. Since the thicknesses of the coating layers are different, it is possible to expose only the tip of the emitter only by uniformly etching the entire substrate, and the region for CNT growth can be easily selected. In selected areas, CNTs can be grown after the catalyst is applied or directly. Thereby, CNT can be reliably and easily generated in a selected portion.
The CNT generation method and apparatus according to the present invention are applied not only to a low-voltage driven high-current electron source emitter used in an FED, but also to an electron beam storage device, an electron beam exposure apparatus, or an electron beam probe microscope using such an electron source emitter. obtain.
