Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to an electrode for a polymer electrolyte fuel cell and a method for producing the same.
Conventionally, as a method for producing a polymer electrolyte fuel cell, for example, there has been the following method. First, the electrode catalyst powder carrying platinum on carbon black (acetylene black) is subjected to plasma irradiation treatment under atmospheric pressure to make the surface hydrophilic. And an electrode is produced using the catalyst powder for electrodes which performed the hydrophilic treatment. And a polymer electrolyte is pinched | interposed with the produced electrode, and a polymer electrolyte fuel cell is produced (for example, refer patent document 1).
However, since the hydrophilization by the method of Patent Document 1 is a plasma treatment to the electrode catalyst powder, it cannot be said that the treatment such as prevention of powder scattering is complicated and efficient. Moreover, it is thought that the method of patent document 1 is hydrophilization with respect to the whole electrode part. In particular, in the case of the hydrogen electrode, water generated for humidification together with water generated in the entire catalyst layer or hydrogen adheres to the surface of the hydrogen electrode, and contact with hydrogen supplied from the hydrogen electrode side through the gas diffusion layer is not caused. It will be cut off.
In view of the above, the present invention provides an electrode for a solid polymer fuel cell that makes the surface of the electrode and the vicinity of the electrode hydrophilic by a more efficient and simple process and enables production of a higher performance solid polymer fuel cell. It is an object of the present invention to provide a manufacturing method thereof.
In order to achieve the above object, an electrode for a polymer electrolyte fuel cell according to claim 1 of the present invention has a gas diffusion layer and a catalyst layer formed on the gas diffusion layer. Proton-dissociating groups are introduced on the surface of the catalyst layer and in the vicinity of the surface by the plasma treatment.
According to the present invention, by performing plasma treatment after forming the catalyst layer on the gas diffusion layer, proton-dissociating groups are introduced into the surface of the catalyst layer and the vicinity of the surface of the catalyst layer, in particular, the catalyst carrier in the catalyst layer. Therefore, the proton conduction efficiency is improved. Thereby, the output voltage per cell of the fuel cell is improved, and the power generation efficiency is improved. Therefore, it is possible to reduce the number of cells required when assembling a stack to achieve a predetermined voltage, and it is possible to reduce the size of the manufactured fuel cell.
Further, since the surface other than the surface of the catalyst layer opposite to the gas diffusion layer and in the vicinity of the surface is not hydrophilized, the catalyst layer is not easily covered with the generated water or moisture for humidification supplied from the gas diffusion layer side. Therefore, the contact state with hydrogen can be kept good.
Further, according to the present invention, the plasma treatment is performed on the electrode configured by forming the catalyst layer on the gas diffusion layer. Therefore, compared with the case where the plasma treatment is performed on the electrode catalyst powder, the treatment is easier and the battery can be efficiently manufactured.
In addition, the electrode for a solid polymer fuel cell of the present invention can be used as a hydrogen electrode, an oxygen electrode, or both a hydrogen electrode and an oxygen electrode after being plasma-treated and joined to a polymer electrolyte membrane.
Further, according to the electrode for a solid polymer fuel cell of the present invention, a proton separating group is introduced into the solid polymer electrolyte and the catalyst (especially the catalyst support) by having the solid polymer electrolyte and the catalyst in the catalyst layer. Is done. Therefore, since the outdoor polymer electrolyte into which the proton dissociating group is introduced increases the affinity between the solid polymer electrolyte into which the proton-separating group is not introduced and the catalyst, the proton conduction efficiency is improved.
Further, according to the present invention, it is preferable to introduce a proton-separating group by performing plasma treatment on the electrode surface to which hydrogen peroxide or an inorganic acid is added. In particular, by applying plasma treatment after applying hydrogen peroxide or an inorganic acid to the surface of the catalyst layer, the conductivity of protons is further improved, and a higher-performance fuel cell can be fabricated.
In the method for producing an electrode for a polymer electrolyte fuel cell of the present invention, a catalyst layer is formed on a gas diffusion layer to constitute an electrode, and the surface of the catalyst layer is subjected to plasma treatment, and the surface and the vicinity of the electrode surface It is characterized by introducing a proton-separating group.
According to the present invention, since the catalyst layer is formed on the gas diffusion layer and then the plasma treatment is performed, the proton leaving group is introduced into the catalyst layer surface and the vicinity of the catalyst layer surface, particularly the catalyst carrier in the catalyst layer. Proton conduction efficiency is improved. Thereby, the output voltage per cell of the fuel cell is improved, and the power generation efficiency is improved. Therefore, it is possible to reduce the number of cells required when assembling a stack to achieve a predetermined voltage, and it is possible to reduce the size of the manufactured fuel cell.
According to the present invention, since a proton-dissociating group is introduced on the electrode surface and in the vicinity of the electrode surface by performing plasma treatment after forming the catalyst layer on the gas diffusion layer, the electrode surface, particularly the surface of the catalyst layer and the catalyst The vicinity of the surface of the layer is hydrophilized, and proton conduction efficiency is improved. Thereby, the output voltage per cell of the fuel cell is improved, and the power generation efficiency is improved. Therefore, it is possible to reduce the number of cells required when assembling a stack to achieve a predetermined voltage, and it is possible to reduce the size of the manufactured fuel cell.
Hereinafter, embodiments of a polymer electrolyte fuel cell electrode according to the present invention will be described with reference to the drawings.
In the polymer electrolyte fuel cell of the present embodiment, a proton leaving group is introduced on the electrode surface and in the vicinity of the electrode surface by performing plasma treatment on the electrode surface. Hereinafter, the solid polymer fuel cell electrode will be described together with the description of the solid polymer fuel cell.

The solid
The
The
The
For example, carbon black can be used as the catalyst carrier of the
The
The
The
The
(E.A.Ticianelli, et al.: J. Electrochem. Soc. 135. No.9, p2209(1988))や滴下法(M. Uchida, et al.: J. Electrochem. Soc. 142.
The
Further, the
FIG. 2 is a schematic diagram showing the state of the hydrogen electrode 3 (oxygen electrode 4). FIG. 3 is a schematic diagram showing the state of the interface between the hydrogen electrode 3 (oxygen electrode 4) and the solid
FIG. 4 is a schematic diagram showing the state of the interface (three-phase interface) on the
The
Here, let us consider a case where no proton-dissociating group exists in the three-phase interface or in the vicinity of the three-phase interface. The
On the other hand, in this embodiment, the
FIG. 5 is a diagram illustrating a
Further, a
On the other hand, a
In the present embodiment, a high frequency electric field is generated between the
By this plasma irradiation, proton-dissociating groups such as hydroxyl groups are introduced into the surface of the
In this plasma treatment, only one of the
In the plasma treatment of the present embodiment, as a pretreatment for plasma irradiation, a chemical substance having a proton dissociation group such as hydrogen peroxide, sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid or the like is added to the surface of the
Further, the catalyst layers 3b and 4b of the
As described above, the polymer electrolyte
In the plasma treatment, the surfaces of the catalyst layers 3b and 4b and the vicinity of the surfaces are cleaned to remove impurities, and the surfaces of the catalyst layers 3b and 4b and the vicinity of the surface are hydrophilized, thereby improving proton conduction efficiency. Thereby, the output voltage per cell of the fuel cell is improved, and the power generation efficiency is improved. Therefore, it is possible to reduce the number of cells required when assembling a stack to achieve a predetermined voltage, and it is possible to reduce the size of the manufactured fuel cell.
In the present embodiment, the plasma treatment is performed on what is configured as an electrode by forming the catalyst layers 3b and 4b on the gas diffusion layers 3a and 4a. Therefore, according to this embodiment, since the plasma treatment is performed on the electrode configured, the treatment is simpler and more efficient than the case where the plasma irradiation treatment is performed on the electrode catalyst powder. A battery can be assembled.
In addition, the electrode for the solid polymer fuel cell of the present embodiment can be used as the
In addition, according to the present embodiment, a proton-dissociating group is formed on the surfaces of the catalyst layers 3b and 4b and in the vicinity thereof by performing a plasma treatment after bringing hydrogen peroxide or an inorganic acid into contact with the surfaces of the catalyst layers 3b and 4b. It has been introduced. Therefore, it is possible to further improve the conductivity of protons and manufacture a higher performance fuel cell.

Examples of the polymer electrolyte fuel cell electrode according to the present invention will be described below.
(Production of electrodes)
Electrodes were prepared using the dropping method (M. Uchida, et al .: J. Electrochem. Soc. 142. No. 2, p.463 (1995)). The electrode has a two-layer structure of a gas diffusion layer and a catalyst layer. As the gas diffusion layer, carbon paper (product name: TG1-1-120, manufactured by Toray Industries, Inc.) was used after being subjected to water repellent treatment. As the material for the catalyst layer, 29% platinum supported carbon black (Tanaka Kikinzoku) was used. 20mg of platinum-supported carbon black (20mg) is dispersed in 18ml of butyl acetate, and 20ml of 5% solution of Nafion 1125 (DuPont), which is a material for the solid polymer electrolyte membrane, is dropped to form a cross-linked structure. Thus, a catalyst layer was prepared so as to be 0.25 mg / cm 2 . The gas diffusion layer and the catalyst layer produced at the end were joined by hot press, and the electrode was produced. The size of the completed electrode was 22 mm square.
Using a method similar to the above, a total of six electrodes were prepared, including two reference electrodes, two plasma processing electrodes, and two plasma processing electrodes using hydrogen peroxide.
(Plasma processing equipment)
As the plasma processing apparatus, the plasma processing apparatus shown in FIG. 5 was used. The transmission frequency of the high frequency power supply was 13.56 MHz, and the output was 40 W. The gas used as the plasma was He and flowed into the
Plasma irradiation was performed on four of the prepared six electrodes. Of the four sheets, two sheets were directly irradiated with plasma twice, and the remaining two sheets were irradiated with plasma once and then sprayed with hydrogen peroxide on the surface. went.
(Solid polymer electrolyte membrane)
Nafion 1125 (manufactured by DuPont) was used as the solid polymer electrolyte membrane disposed between the electrodes. The size was 35 mm square and the thickness was 50 μm.
(Production of polymer electrolyte fuel cell)
As the polymer electrolyte fuel cell, a commercially available fuel cell assembly kit (product name: type SSJ, manufactured by Chemix) was used. As the electrode and the solid polymer electrolyte membrane, those described above were used, respectively, and three types of fuel cells were produced: 1) without plasma treatment, 2) with plasma treatment, and 3) with hydrogen peroxide treatment and with plasma treatment.
(Evaluation of polymer electrolyte fuel cells)
The three types of fuel cells 1) without plasma treatment, 2) with plasma treatment, 3) with hydrogen peroxide treatment and with plasma treatment were connected to a 3522-50 LCR HiTester (manufactured by Hioki Electric Co., Ltd.), and the open circuit voltage was measured. 2 sccm of hydrogen was supplied to the hydrogen electrode side, and the oxygen electrode side was exposed to the atmosphere. The measurement was performed at room temperature (20 ° C.). The measurement results are shown in Table 1.
As shown in Table 1, it can be seen that the open circuit voltage increases in the order of 1) without plasma treatment, 2) with plasma treatment, and 3) with hydrogen peroxide treatment and with plasma treatment. From this result, it is considered that when the electrode prepared by impregnating the electrolyte is subjected to plasma treatment, a proton-dissociating group such as a hydroxyl group is introduced into the electrode and the catalyst utilization rate is increased. Moreover, it was confirmed from the comparison between 2) with plasma treatment and 3) with hydrogen peroxide treatment and with plasma treatment that the open circuit voltage was further improved by performing the hydrogen peroxide treatment.
