XVIII型コラーゲンは、非細線維性コラーゲン群(non-fibrillar collagen type family)に属し、1315個、1527個、および1774個のアミノ酸残基を有するタンパク質をコードする、3種の異なるスプライシング変異型が発見され得る(Rehn, PNAS 91:4234, 1994年)。差は、遺伝子のN−末端部分の変化によって生じ、従って3種のスプライシングの変異型は全て、自身が非コラーゲン性のドメイン11(NC11)のフラグメントであるエンドスタチンの材料になる可能性がある。XVIII型コラーゲンの機能は知られていないが、そのメッセージは血管が高度に新生された組織において実質的に発現されることから、脈管周囲のマトリックスの構築および/または構造の役割が提案されている(Ohら、Genomics 19:494,1994年)。XVIII型コラーゲンの機能についての最初の糸口は、内皮細胞増殖の強力なインヒビターとしてエンドスタチンを精製したことであった。
