994,637. Friction clutches. FRANCAISE DU FERODO S.A. Aug. 1, 1961 [Aug. 2, 1960; Nov. 28, 1960; April 1, 1961], No. 27909/61. Heading F2C. In a plate clutch engaged by a diaphragm spring 17 fulcrumed at 18 on a driving housing 15, a presser plate 14 is drivingly connected to the housing by tangential flexible strips 25 which are secured at their leading ends to the housing by rivets 27 and are secured at their trailing ends to the presser plate by rivets 28. Each flexible strip 25 may have a spring strip 32 associated therewith, each spring 32 being secured at its leading end to the housing by a rivet 27 and being forked or apertured at its trailing end to pass freely around the rivet 28 and bear against the strip 25 so as to withdraw the presser plate on disengaging the clutch. Alternatively, springs may be attached to the presser plate and pass over the back of the diaphragm spring 17 to ensure withdrawal of the presser plate. The presser plate may be formed at 27<SP>1</SP> with rivet holes for securing the flexible strips to the housing for the reverse direction of rotation. If the clutch is liable to be used for either direction of rotation two sets of flexible strips are used, secured to the housing at 27 and 27<SP>1</SP> respectively, one set serving for forward and the other for reverse drive. Some play is permitted between at least one set of strips and the rivets 28 to allow axial movement of the presser plate. Ventilation passages may be provided in the presser plate.
