Abstract

A uranium-zinc intermetallic compound is prepared from a uranium oxide by reducing the oxide with an excess of magnesium, at least three parts by weight of zinc for each part by weight of residual magnesium being provided in the reaction mixture, the temperature of the reaction mixture being maintained above the melting temperature of magnesium-zinc alloy, e.g. at least 450 DEG C., for a time sufficient to allow magnesium oxide to rise to the top of the mixture and the uranium-zinc intermetallic compound to precipitate. Reduction of the uranium oxide may be carried out in the presence of zinc, or a reacted mixture of oxide and magnesium may be mixed with molten zinc. The reduction reaction may be carried out in a graphite crucible in an electric furnace provided with an inert atmosphere. Uranium may be recovered from the intermetallic compound-containing portion by distillation of the zinc and magnesium therefrom.
