Abstract

1,054,875. Making electrodes. JOHNSON, MATTHEY & CO. Ltd. April 5, 1965 [April 9, 1964], No. 14702/64. Heading B3A. [Also in Division C7] In the manufacture of silver electrolytic anodes, silver of about 99À98% purity is melted under a carbon cover and stirred with a graphite rod to remove as far as possible any oxygen. The molten silver, at 1090‹ C., is poured into a continuous casting machine forming billets which are rapidly water quenched, cut to size and formed into electrodes. The electrodes are annealed in an inert atmosphere to effect homogenization of the crystals at temperature within the range of 400-950‹ C. for a period of 2-16 hours and cooled below 200‹ C., before being exposed in air and quenched in water. The electrodes are thus formed substantially free from oxygen and with homogeneous crystals thereby substantially reducing the tendency for coarse or fine powdered silver from falling away from the anode during plating operations &c. The electrodes may alternatively be formed by extrusion.
