At each feed of a multifeed circular knitting machine, are provided a yarn clamp and a yarn cutter which may be moved along the needles for co-operation with either the main yarn guide or the reinforcing yarn guide. As shown, Fig. 8 carries the main yarn guides F 1 , F 2 , F 3 and reinforcing yarn guides S of each of four feeds. The yarn cutters preferably comprise wire loops 11 connected by metallic segments 12 connected to an electricity supply and enclosed in insulation 15 and forming a ring 1 mounted on the dial cap. Each yarn clamp comprises a vertically movable part 31 carried on a suction tube 3 which part engages ring 1 to clamp yarns. When operating with the main yarn guides, parts 31 are operated by a pattern drum or chain whereas in use with the reinforcing yarn guides, they are operated synchronously with the rotation of the needle cylinder. Suction tubes 3 are carried on a ring 2, their ends fitting into slots 94 in an annular suction duct 95 so that ring 2 may be rotated by a lever 23 engaging a tube 3. Lever 23 is secured to a shaft 24 whose lower end carries a forked lever 25 which rotates ring 1 thus moving rings 1 and 2 synchronously. Rods 32 which lift parts 31 against the action of springs each have two butts, 33, 34 which respectively engage cam rings 4, 5. All clamps YC may be opened together by turning ring 4 in direction P 4 or synchronously with the needle cylinder rotation wherein butts 34 engage a cam 51 on a continuously rotating ring 5. Ring 5 is moved axially to engage butts 34 by rotating ring 6 relatively to fixed ring 61 so that wedge shaped portions on both rings engage one another. Yarn guides F and S may both be operated by a pattern drum or chain or guides S may be operated by the butts of needles selected for knitting the reinforcement. Specification 944,934 is referred to.
