Abstract
976,738. Paper making apparatus. SANDY HILL IRON & BRASS WORKS. May 16,1963 [July 11, 1962], No. 19459/63. Heading D2A. The flow spreader 12 of a headbox has diverging side walls 34, and converging front and back walls 30 and 32 which are depressed along their longitudinal midsection with the angle of depression gradually increasing from the inflow end to the outflow end so that the pulp is pushed towards the side walls. The angle of depression maybe between 2 degrees and 30 degrees. The headbox has an adjustable baffle plate 66, and flow evener rolls 80, 80<SP>1</SP> with vanes 86 (Fig. 4) arranged in axial rows, with the vanes in each row inclined in a direction opposite to the direction of inclination of the vanes in the adjacent rows so that as the rolls rotate minute cross-currents are carried alternately in opposite directions to disperse any fibre flows. The flow spreader may be horizontal with its outflow end leading into passage way 71 of Fig. 1. In which case a flow evener roll 180, Fig. 4 (not shown), is arranged under the concave top wall of the passageway, while there are three flow evener rolls in the headbox proper. The flow spreader may be placed in a cylinder machine vat with the pulp discharge velocity being reduced in a connecting fitting or in approach passages in the vat.
