Abstract
Alkyl pyridines are produced by reacting together, in the vapour phase and at an elevated temperature, preferably 300 DEG to 550 DEG C., a mixture of ethylidene acetone, ammonia and a saturated aliphatic aldehyde or a saturated aliphatic ketone having at least one a -methylene group in the molecule. The process is conveniently performed in the presence of a catalyst, preferably silica and/or alumina which may be admixed with titania, zirconia, ceria or thoria and may contain a metal and/or metal compound.
