Abstract
Alkyl pyridines having alkyl groups in one or more of the 2, 4 and 6 positions are produced by reacting together, in the vapour phase and at elevated temperature preferably 300 DEG to 550 DEG C., a mixture of mesityl oxide, ammonia and a saturated aliphatic aldehyde. The process is conveniently performed in the presence of a catalyst, preferably silica and/or alumina which may be admixed with titania, zirconia, ceria or thoria and may contain a metal and/or metal compound. The mixture of pyridine bases obtained may be separated by, for example, fractional distillation.
