Abstract

957,141. Containers for radio-active materials. INSTITUT DE RECHERCHES DE LA SIDERURGIE FRANCAISE. Oct. 22, 1962 [Nov. 7, 1961], No. 39820/62. Heading H5R. [Also in Division G1] A device for the rapid opening and occulation of the radiation of a radio-active source comprises in combination a source support 2 designed to slide in an appropriate passage in an absorbing container 3, and a pneumatic jack having a piston 6 solid with the source support and co-operating with means 10 for supplying compressed air, electromagnetic control means 11 being provided for controlling the gas pressure in the jack. As shown, the pneumatic jack is of the double action type, and the electromagnetic control means are designed to admit the gas pressure to one or the other face of the piston by abruptly opening and closing valves 8, 9, so that the source 1 is either positioned adjacent the opening 4 in the absorbing container or is held away from the opening in a safety position. Alternatively, a spring may return the source to its safety position. The control system is preferably coupled to photo-electric cells 14a, 14b which allow the source to be positioned adjacent the passage 4 only when the object 15 being irradiated is present.
